Check whether your issuing country is recognised
Recognised jurisdictions — the UK and Crown dependencies, Ireland, most of western Europe, Japan, Singapore, Canada, the USA and New Zealand among others — convert with no tests. Everything else requires the full theory test and Vehicle On Road Test. There is no longer a middle tier: the Experienced Driver Recognition category that let older, experienced drivers skip testing was retired nationally on 30 April 2025, and SA's new rules took effect the next day.

Book at a Service SA centre
Conversions are handled in person at Service SA. The Currie Street city centre is the busiest; Marion, Modbury, Elizabeth and Prospect frequently have appointments earlier for the identical transaction.

Sit the theory test, if required, and collect the temporary permit
Pass the computerised theory test and you are issued a temporary driving permit valid for three months. This is what lets you drive while you arrange the practical test, so treat the issue date as the start of a countdown rather than a formality.

Book and pass the Vehicle On Road Test
The VORT is SA's practical driving assessment. Book it the day you pass theory, because Adelaide metropolitan slots run weeks out and you should not assume the permit will be extended to accommodate the queue.

Attend with documents and receive the SA licence
Bring the overseas licence, translation if needed, passport and visa evidence and proof of a SA address. Vision is screened at the counter and the card is posted to you. Unlike Victoria and WA, South Australia lets you keep the overseas licence after transferring — Ontario, Canada is the only jurisdiction whose licence must be surrendered.

Things most newcomers don’t know

SA's window is 90 days, and the temporary permit issued after the theory test runs a second three-month clock.

Two separate clocks operate here and people conflate them. The first runs 90 days from becoming a permanent resident of South Australia; the second runs three months from passing the theory test. Let the second lapse and you are unable to drive on the permit and facing another wait. Book the Vehicle On Road Test on the day you pass theory, not when you feel ready — Adelaide metropolitan slots are the constraint, not your readiness.

Adelaide's grid and its right-turn arrangements are unusually forgiving, but the tram is not.

The CBD grid is flat and legible, which makes Adelaide the easiest Australian capital to learn to drive in. What catches people is the Glenelg tram running down King William Street and out to the Bay: you must not pass a stationary tram where passengers are boarding, and the tram has priority at several intersections in ways drivers from tram-free cities never anticipate.

Kangaroos on the Hills roads are the real Adelaide driving hazard.

The Adelaide Hills sit twenty minutes from the CBD and the roads through them — the South Eastern Freeway, Greenhill Road, the Gorge Road — carry heavy kangaroo activity at dawn and dusk. Animal strike is a routine SA insurance claim and comprehensive policies treat it differently from other collisions. Check your policy, and avoid those roads at last light.

Common mistakes to avoid

Reading '90 days' as three months in a loose sense — it is a dated deadline running from the day you became a permanent resident of South Australia.
Booking the Vehicle On Road Test only after you feel ready, when the queue is the constraint and the permit is ticking.
Relying on pre-May-2025 advice that your country converts without testing — seventeen jurisdictions moved into the testing group on 1 May 2025 and the Experienced Driver Recognition tier no longer exists anywhere in Australia.
Assuming an International Driving Permit extends your right to drive as a permanent resident — it does not.
Passing a stationary tram on King William Street while passengers are boarding, which is both a fine and dangerous.
