Before you start
- A signed, MoHRE-attested employment contract with an Abu Dhabi-licensed employer, or a direct government or university appointment
- A passport valid at least six months with blank pages, and photographs to ICP specification
- Valid UAE health insurance — in Al Ain this means a policy meeting the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi requirements, not the federal MoHRE basic package
- An attested degree certificate where the role or skill level requires one
Step-by-step
- 1
Sponsor obtains the work permit and entry permit
A mainland employer applies through MoHRE for the labour approval and through the federal ICP for the employment entry permit. Government and university employers sponsor directly. You are not able to file this yourself.

Enter — or change status without leaving
The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs states that entry visas are valid for 60 days from the date they are issued, so do not let a permit sit unused. If you are already inside the UAE on a visit or other status, an in-country change of status is now standard and avoids the old exit-and-return flight.

Take the medical fitness test
Mandatory for residents aged 18 and over: a blood screen and a chest X-ray for tuberculosis at an approved centre. An active communicable disease can mean refusal. Al Ain has its own approved screening centres, so this does not require a trip to Abu Dhabi city.

Give Emirates ID biometrics
Fingerprints, a facial scan and an official photograph at an ICP-approved centre. The residency file cannot complete without them, and adults must attend in person. Note the Emirates ID number as soon as it exists — banks and telecom operators can often begin on the number before the card is printed.
In personWho: YouSame day for the appointment - 5
Collect the digital residence permit and finish everything else
The permit is issued electronically and downloadable through the ICP's app. From there the Emirates ID unlocks the rest: the bank account, the postpaid SIM, the Tawtheeq tenancy registration and the driving licence conversion. Do not start a lease or a utility account before the ID exists.

Things most newcomers don’t know
The much-quoted 'sixty days from entry to finish residency' has no citation on the federal portal — treat it as a working assumption, not a rule you can point at.
u.ae's general provisions for the residence visa, its Emirates ID page and its visa FAQ all state no such period. What is officially stated is that entry visas are valid for 60 days from their issuance date. There is an overstay fine regime and the fines fall on the applicant rather than the sponsor, so the practical advice stands — track every stage and chase early — but ask ICP for the deadline that applies to your file rather than trusting a number that no government page publishes.

Al Ain is ICP plus TAMM. It is not GDRFA, and it is not Ejari.
Dubai runs its own immigration directorate and its own tenancy system, and the majority of UAE relocation content online is written from Dubai. In Al Ain your residence file is federal ICP, your service portal is Abu Dhabi's TAMM, and your tenancy goes on Tawtheeq through Al Ain City Municipality. Following Dubai instructions puts you on portals that will not accept your file at all.

There is no visa sticker, and people will still ask you for one.
Since 2022 the residence permit outside Dubai is entirely digital. Landlords, banks and overseas consulates who ask to see 'the visa stamp' should be shown the Emirates ID or the residence-permit PDF. It catches people because Dubai — the emirate everyone reads about — is the exception that still issues stickers.

Your health insurance has to satisfy Abu Dhabi, not the federal minimum.
Insurance is a condition of issuing and renewing every UAE residence permit, but the standard it must meet is set by the emirate. Al Ain is Abu Dhabi, so the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi mandate applies — the federal MoHRE basic package designed for the northern emirates is not the relevant product here. Confirm which scheme your employer has actually bought.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Following Dubai's GDRFA or Ejari-based instructions in Al Ain, where neither has any authority.
- Assuming a federal MoHRE basic health package satisfies the Abu Dhabi insurance requirement.
- Letting an issued entry permit sit unused — the UAE states entry visas are valid 60 days from issuance.
- Signing a lease or shipping belongings before the medical fitness test has come back clear.
- Expecting a passport sticker, then panicking when the permit arrives as a PDF.
