Before you start
- A residence permit and a registered employment relationship
- Your employment contract and payslips
- Registration with the Social Security Corporation
- Knowledge of your own nationality's rules if it taxes worldwide income
Step-by-step

Understand the basis: income arising in or from Jordan
Jordanian income tax attaches to income arising in or from Jordan for any person, regardless of where it is paid. That means an offshore payroll does not automatically put a Jordan-based role outside the system. If you are working in Amman for a foreign entity, get advice specific to your arrangement rather than assuming.

Check that your employer is withholding correctly
Employers withhold income tax at source on salaries. Look at the first payslip and confirm both the income tax and the social security line appear and look plausible against the bands. Errors here compound quietly across a year.

Claim the personal exemptions and deductions you are entitled to
Jordan grants a personal exemption and further amounts for family, plus limited deductions for defined categories such as medical, education, rent and loan interest, subject to caps and documentation. These materially reduce the taxable base. Confirm the current figures and evidence requirements with the Income and Sales Tax Department, because they are revised.

Register with and verify the Social Security Corporation
Non-Jordanians employed locally are covered. Contributions are deducted from pay and matched by the employer on covered salary up to a monthly ceiling. Verify your registration through the SSC rather than assuming the employer completed it.

Budget 16% general sales tax into your cost of living
GST applies at 16% on most goods and services, with lower rates or exemptions on some essentials. It is inside displayed prices. Combined with income tax and social security, Jordan's total tax wedge on a professional salary is substantial by regional standards and needs to be modelled rather than assumed away.

Check your own nationality's position and any treaty
US citizens and green-card holders file on worldwide income wherever they live, with the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion, credits and an FBAR over USD 10,000 in aggregate foreign accounts. Jordan has a network of double taxation treaties — whether one covers you, and how, is worth establishing rather than guessing.

Things most newcomers don’t know
Jordan taxes income arising in or from Jordan, wherever it is paid.
The basis is where the income arises, not where the payment lands. That matters enormously in a city full of people employed by foreign entities, paid into foreign accounts, working from Amman. The assumption that an offshore payroll puts you outside the Jordanian system is common and is not something to rely on without advice specific to your contract. Get this settled at the start of an assignment; retrospective positions are far harder to fix.

The headline rates are misleading because the exemptions are large.
Jordan's personal exemption and family allowances, plus capped deductions for defined spending, remove a substantial slice of income before the bands apply. Applying the 5%-to-30% schedule to a gross salary therefore badly overstates the bill for most people. Conversely, ignoring social security and 16% GST understates the total wedge. The only useful number is a modelled net, and it is worth paying an accountant for it once at the start.

Social security covers non-Jordanians too, and it is deducted from your pay.
Unlike the Gulf, where non-nationals typically pay nothing into social insurance, Jordan's Social Security Corporation covers non-Jordanians employed locally with a contribution deducted from the employee's pay and a larger one from the employer, on covered salary up to a monthly ceiling. Somebody transferring from a Gulf posting on a nominally similar gross salary will see a materially different net. Ask for a modelled payslip before accepting an offer.

A Gulf-to-Amman move is a real pay cut even at the same gross, and that is the whole point of modelling it.
Between income tax, social security and 16% general sales tax, the tax wedge in Jordan is substantial where the Gulf's is near zero. Amman's lower rents and cheaper food genuinely offset a lot of it, and quality of life arguments are real. But the arithmetic only works if you do it: comparing a Jordanian gross against a Gulf gross and concluding Amman is a small step down is one of the most common financial mistakes people make moving here.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming an offshore payroll puts a Jordan-based role outside Jordanian income tax.
- Comparing a Jordanian gross salary against a Gulf gross salary without modelling the net.
- Never claiming the personal exemption and deductions you are entitled to.
- Assuming social security does not apply to non-Jordanians.
- Assuming tax paid in Jordan means nothing is due at home — US citizens still file, plus an FBAR.
