The Alaska Department of Revenue states plainly that Alaska has no individual income tax and no state sales and use tax. The Municipality of Anchorage does not add a general sales tax on top: what it levies are targeted excise taxes on hotel rooms, rental vehicles, alcohol, marijuana, tobacco and motor fuel, plus property tax. This is genuinely unusual — most Alaskan communities that lack an income tax make it up with a local sales tax, and Juneau charges 5%. Anchorage does not. Read a job offer here against a Seattle or Portland one with that in mind, then read the grocery bill.

The rule is not 'twelve months', it is 'all of the previous calendar year'. The 2026 application requires you to have been an Alaska resident during all of calendar year 2025. Arrive in March 2026 and your first qualifying year is 2027, applied for in 2028 — nearly two years of waiting. The 2025 dividend was USD 1,000, and it is per person, so a family of four is planning around USD 4,000. Do not budget it into year one, and be careful about anything that looks like claiming residency elsewhere while you wait.

Alaska's DMV gives a new resident 90 days to transfer an out-of-state driver licence, but requires you to apply for vehicle registration within 10 days of entering the state or taking a job here. Almost every other state front-loads the licence and is relaxed about the plates. Registration runs for two years, and the DMV also collects a Motor Vehicle Registration Tax on behalf of municipalities that have adopted one — it is a personal property tax by another name, so the biennial bill is bigger than the state fee alone suggests.

At the winter solstice Anchorage gets about five and a half hours of daylight, with the sun barely clearing the Chugach; at the summer solstice it gets more than nineteen, and it never really goes dark. Plan for both. Blackout blinds in June are not a luxury, and in December a light box, a vitamin D conversation with a doctor and a deliberate habit of getting outside during the short bright window are what long-term residents actually do. Employers here are used to the conversation; newcomers routinely are not.

Almost everything on an Anchorage shelf arrived by barge from Tacoma or by air, and the freight is in the price. Budget noticeably more per week than you would in the Lower 48 for the same basket, expect fresh produce quality to vary with the boat schedule, and read the small print on any 'free US shipping' offer — Alaska is routinely excluded or surcharged, and a lot of furniture and bulky goods simply will not ship here at all. Costco, the local wholesale run and a chest freezer are the standard local answers, along with filling that freezer from a salmon season.

The Municipality of Anchorage is a merged city and borough covering roughly 1,950 square miles, which makes it larger than Delaware. Chugiak, Eagle River and the ski town of Girdwood, 40 miles down Turnagain Arm, are all inside the same government and the same school district — so 'moving to Anchorage' can mean a downtown flat or a mountain valley an hour away. Half a million acres of Chugach State Park is inside the boundary too. Check what your address is actually near before you sign.
