The I-10 and I-12 split east of downtown is one of the worst recurring bottlenecks in the country and there are only two Mississippi crossings serving the metro. A fifteen-minute map distance can be forty-five minutes at peak, and a single crash on the bridge stops the region. This is the most consequential thing you can check about an address here.

Things most newcomers don’t know

Baton Rouge keeps its inspection for a completely different reason than New Orleans does.

HB 1085 ends the statewide requirement from 1 January 2027 and replaces the sticker with a Vehicle Identification Program decal. New Orleans keeps a brake tag because the Act preserves municipal inspection programmes. East Baton Rouge keeps one because the Act's repeal is conditioned, in parishes subject to the federal Clean Air Act inspection and maintenance requirement, on the EPA accepting LDEQ's implementation-plan amendments. Same state, same law, two different mechanisms — and everywhere else in Louisiana the sticker simply goes.

The emissions programme is five parishes, and it follows where the vehicle is registered.

Ascension, East Baton Rouge, Iberville, Livingston and West Baton Rouge — the Baton Rouge ozone area — run an inspection and maintenance programme that has included emissions testing since 2000 and OBD-II scanning since 2002. It applies to gasoline vehicles of 10,000 lb gross weight and under, and only stations inside those five parishes can perform it. Registering in a neighbouring parish to avoid it is not a plan; the requirement follows the registration address.
