A local ride is roughly ₪6 with a free transfer window. Post-paid apps apply daily and monthly fare caps automatically; a stored-value card does not.

Work out which of the two stations is yours
Be'er Sheva Center sits near the Old City and the central bus station; Be'er Sheva North serves the university, Soroka and the technology park. They are different journeys from most neighbourhoods and different walks at the far end. Check which one your workplace is actually near before you choose a flat.

Price the Tel Aviv commute honestly
The centre of the country is about an hour and a quarter each way by train, plus the local legs at both ends. Plenty of people do it a couple of days a week; very few do it five. If you are moving here for the rent and keeping a Tel Aviv job, run the door-to-door timing at rush hour before you sign anything.

Decide about a car by what you do at the weekend
In the city, buses and a bicycle cover most of it. Out of the city, the Negev is the point of living here — Sde Boker, Ein Avdat, Makhtesh Ramon, the Dead Sea — and public transport to those places is sparse and slow. This, not the daily commute, is what makes most Beersheba households own a car.

Plan around Shabbat, which stops everything
Israel Railways and the intercity coach network stop from Friday afternoon to Saturday evening, and Beersheba has no Haifa-style Saturday bus exception. A Saturday trip anywhere needs a sherut, a taxi or a car.

Convert your licence within the window
File the online green medical declaration, take a vision test at an approved optician, then book a Misrad HaRishui appointment with your foreign licence, Teudat Zehut and Teudat Oleh. Olim from Western countries with five or more years of driving history who apply within five years of aliyah usually get the expedited, no-practical-test track.

Things most newcomers don’t know

Two stations, and picking the wrong one adds half an hour a day.

Be'er Sheva North is beside the university, Soroka and the tech park; Be'er Sheva Center is by the Old City and the bus station. Almost everyone commuting to the tech park wants North and almost every guide quotes the Center timings. If your job is at the park or the hospital, choose the flat by its bus route to North.

The car is for the desert, not for the commute.

Beersheba is compact and flat and its buses handle daily life. What the buses do not handle is the Negev — the craters, Sde Boker, Ein Avdat, the Dead Sea, Eilat — which is the entire reason many people find living here rewarding rather than merely cheap. Households that arrive car-free usually buy one within a year, and it is a weekend decision rather than a weekday one.

Summer removes the bicycle for about five months.

The city is flat and short-distanced, which makes cycling obvious on paper. In practice an average August high near 34.7°C, with far higher peaks and no shade, means afternoon cycling is not a serious plan from roughly May to October. Plan a summer alternative rather than discovering it in June.

The expedited licence conversion has two separate deadlines.

Your right to drive on a foreign licence ends one year after entry, and the no-test expedited conversion right for olim expires five years after aliyah. People assume there is no urgency because they are still legally driving, then discover at year six that they face the full new-driver theory and practical tests.

Common mistakes to avoid

Choosing a neighbourhood by its distance to Be'er Sheva Center when your job is at the tech park by Be'er Sheva North.
Assuming the Tel Aviv commute is workable five days a week without timing it door to door at rush hour.
Planning a car-free life without checking how you will reach the desert you moved here for.
Driving on a foreign licence past the one-year mark from entry, which voids insurance as well as legality.
Letting the five-year expedited-conversion window lapse and being pushed into the full test route.
