CRNM registration, the 90-day rule, and where your translation has to come from
Register with the Polícia Federal and collect your CRNM within 90 days of entering Brazil on that visa, whatever route brought you — or within 30 days of publication in the Diário Oficial where residence was authorised from inside the country. The CPF comes first and can be obtained before you leave home. Belo Horizonte has a much smaller foreign community than Rio or São Paulo, so the practical texture is different — fewer English-speaking intermediaries, a Federal Police superintendency serving a state of twenty million, and a document process that has to be navigated in Portuguese.

A foreign licence is valid for a maximum of 180 days of regular stay, on the basis of the road traffic conventions Brazil has ratified and of reciprocity, in practice carried with an International Driving Permit. After that, conversion through DETRAN-MG requires a sworn translation, a medical fitness examination and a compulsory psychological assessment. Belo Horizonte is a genuinely difficult city to drive for the first month — the planned core is two grids at forty-five degrees producing multi-way junctions, and outside the Contorno the streets follow the hills. The one road to treat with real respect is the Anel Rodoviário, the ring section of the BR-381 that carries national freight straight through the city.

The CPF is the hard gate. Digital banks then onboard foreigners in days where traditional branches want history you do not have. Minas adds a third option most newcomers never consider: cooperativas de crédito, member-owned institutions with deep roots across the state that will often take a relationship a national bank declines.

Belo Horizonte has a strong health infrastructure for its size — the UFMG teaching hospital, a large private sector led by Mater Dei, and a municipal primary care network with good family health coverage. SUS treats you free whatever your paperwork says. The distinctly local risk is arboviral: Minas Gerais is repeatedly among the Brazilian states worst affected by dengue, with major epidemic years, and the mosquito that carries it breeds in standing water on your own balcony.

Vivo, Claro, TIM and Algar all serve the city well and the choice is essentially about price. Fixed broadband is good and competitively priced, with a healthy set of regional providers alongside the national carriers. The one local wrinkle is topography: Belo Horizonte is built across a bowl of hills below the Serra do Curral, and the steeper districts produce genuine mobile dead spots that no operator has solved.

What to know before you go
Get the CPF before you fly — it is the master key
CriticalReceita Federal will issue a CPF to someone with no visa, no Brazilian address and no presence in the country, online or through a consulate. Since 2023 it has been the single identification number across every public database, and the bank account, the phone chip, the lease and the health card all sit behind it. Belo Horizonte has a much thinner English-language support industry than Rio or São Paulo, so arriving without the CPF means solving the problem in Portuguese, at a counter, with a queue.
Register with the Federal Police within 90 days of entry
CriticalThe clock starts at your arrival stamp under that visa, not at issue, and a trip abroad is not a reliable way to buy a fresh window. The Minas Gerais superintendency in Belo Horizonte serves a state of over twenty million people, so its appointment slots are contested by applicants from Uberlândia, Juiz de Fora and the interior as well as from the capital. Book in your first week and reschedule later if your documents slip. Without a CRNM you cannot sign a lease, take a salaried job, or renew when the first year ends.
The old city is two grids at forty-five degrees, and it will disorient you
ImportantBelo Horizonte was Brazil's first planned city, laid out in 1897 inside a ring road called the Avenida do Contorno. Within that ring an orthogonal grid of streets named after Brazilian states is overlaid by a diagonal grid of avenues named after indigenous peoples, meeting at five- and six-way junctions. Outside the Contorno the plan simply stops and the city grew organically up the hills. The practical consequence is that your sense of direction is useless for a couple of months and that 'straight on' is frequently not an option.
The metro is one line and it does not go where the money is
ImportantBelo Horizonte's single metro line was built along an existing railway, running roughly east–west and skirting the centre. It does not serve the Savassi, Lourdes, Belvedere or the southern districts where most professional employment and most desirable housing sit. The MOVE bus corridors on Antônio Carlos and Cristiano Machado do the heavy lifting instead. Assume buses or a car when you choose where to live, and check the actual journey rather than the metro map.
This is the cheapest of Brazil's big capitals, and that is the point
ImportantRents, restaurants and services here run well below Rio, São Paulo and Brasília for a comparable standard of life, while the city still has a university system, real hospitals, an international airport and a genuine startup scene. A foreign-currency income goes further here than in any other major Brazilian capital. What you give up is the depth of the São Paulo job market, direct long-haul flights, and the sea.
Mineiros are reserved first and extremely loyal afterwards
Good to knowThe social register here is quieter than Rio's and slower than São Paulo's. People are polite and warm but do not open up quickly, invitations take longer to arrive, and directness reads as brusque. The boteco is where the wall comes down — an unhurried evening at a corner bar with the same people every week is how friendships actually form in this city. Newcomers who read the initial reserve as coldness and stop trying miss the whole thing.

Where to go in Belo Horizonte

Food · Centro, inside the Contorno
A covered market of four hundred stalls selling cheese, cachaça, herbs, live birds and the city's most beloved bar snacks.
Local tip: Go on a Saturday morning, buy queijo canastra from a cheese stall, then drink a cold beer standing at the Bar da Lora or one of the counters inside. The fígado com jiló is the local order and it is better than it sounds.
Conjunto Moderno da Pampulha
Culture · Pampulha, northern BH
Niemeyer's first major commission — a curving church, a casino turned art museum and a dance hall around an artificial lake, made UNESCO World Heritage in 2016.
Local tip: The church of São Francisco de Assis was refused consecration for fourteen years because the clergy found it too modern. Walk the lake circuit in the late afternoon and finish at the Casa do Baile — the whole ensemble is 1943 and still looks like the future.
Santa Tereza
Nightlife · East of the centre, across the railway
The bohemian hill district — low houses, the Bar do Museu, and a music scene that produced the Clube da Esquina generation.
Local tip: The Praça Duque de Caxias on a warm evening is the real thing: several bars, no reservations, and people spilling into the square. It is where BH's claim to be the boteco capital is most obviously true.

The old seat of state government, its palaces converted into a dense row of free museums around formal gardens.
Local tip: Nearly every building on the square is now a museum and nearly all are free. The Memorial Minas Gerais Vale is the best of them and takes an afternoon. Go on a Sunday when the square is closed to cars and the whole neighbourhood is out.
Inhotim
Nature · Brumadinho, 60 km south-west
A botanical garden of a hundred hectares with contemporary art pavilions scattered through it — the largest open-air art museum in the world.
Local tip: Treat it as a full day with proper shoes, not a morning trip. The palm collection alone is internationally significant and the pavilions are built around single works. Go midweek; weekend crowds change the experience entirely.
Feira Hippie, Avenida Afonso Pena
Hidden gemCulture · Centro, Sunday mornings only
Roughly three thousand stalls filling a kilometre of the city's main avenue every Sunday since 1969 — crafts, clothes, food and the whole city walking through it.
Local tip: One of the largest open-air fairs in Latin America and almost no foreign resident goes, because nobody tells them. Arrive before ten, eat at the food section at the northern end, and understand that the point is the crowd rather than the merchandise.
