Port, rail & the Lobito Corridor
Lobito Atlantic Railway (Trafigura, Mota-Engil, Vecturis), Porto do Lobito, Caminho de Ferro de Benguela
The 1902 concession ran 99 years and reverted to the Angolan state on 28 November 2001. The 2023 concession runs 30 years, extendable by 20 more on investment thresholds including a 259 km branch line costed at around USD 1 billion. The African Development Bank has pledged USD 500 million of a USD 1.6 billion programme.
Fishing & fish processing
Artisanal and industrial fleets at Baía Farta and Lobito, fishmeal and canning plants
The same cold Benguela Current that makes the climate mild makes this one of the most productive fisheries in the South Atlantic. Baía Farta is the industrial end of it and a genuine employer rather than a picturesque one.
Energy & industry at Lobito
Sonangol, fabrication and supply yards, the planned Lobito refinery, cement and construction materials
Lobito is Angola's designated second industrial pole after Luanda, and the refinery project is the headline. Treat announced start dates with care — Angolan refinery timelines have slipped repeatedly — but the fabrication and supply-base work is real and hiring now.
Agriculture & agro-processing
Irrigated schemes on the Catumbela and Cavaco rivers, Dombe Grande, sugar and banana estates
The river valleys behind the coast are irrigated rather than rain-fed, which is what makes farming possible in a semi-arid province, and the Benguela–Huambo axis is the country's most important food corridor.
Public administration, health & education
Governo Provincial de Benguela, Universidade Katyavala Bwila, provincial hospital network
The provincial capital function plus a public university make government and education a larger employer than the private sector in the city itself, which is why Benguela feels less like a company town than Lobito does.
Tourism & hospitality
Hotels along Praia Morena and the Restinga, Baía Azul and Baía Farta operators
Domestic rather than international tourism, concentrated on the beaches and on carnival, and heavily seasonal. Real, but small — do not move here expecting a tourism economy of European scale.
