India's employment visa is employer-sponsored and carries a minimum annual salary threshold. Registration with the FRRO is mandatory within 14 days of arrival for visas valid over 180 days, done online through e-FRRO. Chennai's FRRO handles a substantial foreign population โ the manufacturing sector brings significant Korean and Japanese communities โ and is used to the process.
Read the full step-by-step guideYou may drive on a valid foreign licence with an International Driving Permit for a limited period after arrival, then need an Indian licence from the RTO covering your address. The Chennai-specific consideration is water: the city floods in the October-to-December north-east monsoon, and a stalled car in standing water is an expensive and common outcome. Know your route's flood points before November.
Read the full step-by-step guideWhich account you can open depends on your residential status under FEMA, not your visa. A foreign national resident in India for employment can generally open an ordinary resident savings account. Everything requires a PAN card and thorough KYC. Chennai's advantage is that the manufacturing sector's Korean and Japanese communities mean several branches handle foreign customers as routine.
Read the full step-by-step guideChennai attracts a very large share of India's medical tourists, which means an unusual concentration of specialist private care โ Apollo was built here into a national chain, and Sankara Nethralaya is among the world's leading eye hospitals. The local health pattern follows the water: dengue and leptospirosis rise after the north-east monsoon floods, and heat illness is a genuine risk from March to June.
Read the full step-by-step guideIndia requires full identity verification for every SIM, and for foreign nationals that means passport, visa, photographs, local address proof and sometimes a reference, followed by verification. SIMs issued to foreigners carry validity tied to the visa. In a city that floods and loses power, a charged phone with working data is also a genuine safety matter in November and December.
Read the full step-by-step guideYou are tax-resident in India if you spend 182 days or more in a financial year, or 60 days or more in the year plus 365 across the preceding four. The new regime under section 115BAC has been the default since AY 2024-25 โ lower rates, very few deductions โ with the old regime available by election. Chennai is one of only four cities classified as a metro for the house rent allowance formula, which makes the old regime relatively more attractive here than in Hyderabad or Bengaluru.

Reading a list isnโt learning it. Globe Quest turns these into a trainer โ hear each phrase spoken, drill them with spaced repetition, and get scored as you say them out loud.
Most of India is soaked by the south-west monsoon from June to September. Chennai gets the north-east monsoon instead, from roughly October to December, and that is also Bay of Bengal cyclone season. The 2015 floods and Cyclone Michaung in 2023 both hit in this window. If you arrive in July expecting monsoon and find it dry and 38ยฐC, this is why โ and it means your flood risk assessment should be about November, not July.
Chennai has flooded catastrophically and nearly run dry within a few years of each other. In 2019 the main reservoirs effectively emptied and the city ran on tankers; in 2015 and 2023 large areas were underwater. Ask a prospective landlord two separate questions: does this area flood in the north-east monsoon, and where does the building's water come from in April and May. Neither answer predicts the other.
Employment visa holders with a visa valid over 180 days must register with the FRRO covering their Chennai address within 14 days of arrival. Fully online through e-FRRO, no agent required. You need passport, address proof, appointment letter, employment contract and proof of annual income.
The Permanent Account Number gates banking, salary and most financial transactions, and without it your employer must deduct tax at a higher rate. Foreign nationals can apply online. Start it in week one.
Tamil Nadu has a long history of resisting Hindi imposition, and Tamil linguistic identity is genuinely strong. English works fine professionally and in the IT corridor, but Hindi is much less useful than in Delhi or Mumbai, and assuming otherwise reads badly. Learning vanakkam, nandri and a handful of Tamil courtesies goes further here than almost anywhere in India.
Chennai sits at sea level on the Coromandel coast, and April and May combine high thirties with high humidity, which is considerably harder to tolerate than Delhi's dry heat at the same temperature. Air conditioning is essential, power backup matters, and the local rhythm shifts to early mornings and evenings. Agni Nakshatram in May is the peak, and locals genuinely plan around it.
Hyundai, Renault-Nissan, Ashok Leyland, TVS, Daimler India
Chennai produces a very large share of India's car exports and is often called the Detroit of India โ Hyundai's Indian manufacturing is based here and the supplier ecosystem around it is vast.
TCS, Infosys, Cognizant, Zoho, Freshworks, Accenture
The OMR corridor is one of India's largest IT clusters, and Chennai is unusual in having produced two globally significant product companies of its own in Zoho and Freshworks.
Apollo Hospitals, MIOT, Sankara Nethralaya, Fortis Malar
Chennai attracts a very large share of India's medical tourists, and the resulting concentration of specialist care is a genuine advantage for residents.
Foxconn, Pegatron, Samsung, Nokia, Salcomp
The Sriperumbudur belt west of the city has become a major electronics manufacturing cluster, including significant iPhone assembly capacity.
World Bank, Standard Chartered, HSBC, Bank of America, Scope International
Substantial global back-office and technology operations, weighted to banking operations and analytics.
Kollywood studios, AVM, Sun TV Network
Tamil cinema is one of India's largest and most influential film industries, and it is culturally central here in a way that is hard to overstate.
Nature ยท Central seafront
One of the longest urban beaches in the world, running about 13 kilometres, and the city's evening living room.
Local tip: The sea here has strong currents and swimming is not advised โ this is a walking and eating beach, not a bathing one. Come at sunset for the bajji stalls and the crowds, which are the point.
Culture ยท Mylapore
A 7th-century Shiva temple with a towering carved gopuram, at the heart of the city's oldest neighbourhood.
Local tip: Walk the four Mada streets around the temple tank in the early morning, when the flower market is running and the neighbourhood is at its best. Dress modestly; non-Hindus may not enter the inner sanctum.
Landmark ยท 60km south along the coast
A UNESCO site of 7th- and 8th-century Pallava rock-cut temples and monoliths carved directly from the granite shore.
Local tip: Go early on a weekday. The Shore Temple gets the crowds; the Five Rathas and Arjuna's Penance are better, and the unfinished carvings on the hill above are free and almost empty.
Neighborhood ยท Central Chennai
One of the highest-turnover retail districts in the world by area, especially for silk saris and gold.
Local tip: Genuinely overwhelming during wedding season and Diwali. Ranganathan Street is the famous crush; go on a weekday morning or not at all. The silk shops are the real reason to come.
Nature ยท Adyar
260 acres of quiet gardens at the Adyar estuary, containing one of the largest banyan trees in the world.
Local tip: Free, open mornings, and an extraordinary pocket of silence in a city of eight million. The great banyan's aerial roots cover a huge area โ walk under it.
Nature ยท 60km north
India's second-largest brackish lagoon, with flamingos in winter and the ruins of a 17th-century Dutch settlement beside it.
Local tip: Almost nobody from Chennai goes north. Flamingo season is roughly November to March, the same months when the weather is bearable, and the Dutch cemetery with its carved tombstones is completely deserted.
