Landmark · The eastern end of the microcentro

The 1965 arch bridge over the Paraná to Foz do Iguaçu — the reason the city exists and the single busiest thing in it.

Local tip: Walk it early on a weekday morning before the sacoleiro traffic builds. The view up the gorge is genuinely dramatic, and crossing on foot is the fastest way to understand how completely the two cities function as one economy with a customs post in the middle.

Nature · Presidente Franco, ~10 km south

A 40-metre triple waterfall on the Monday river inside a municipal reserve — Iguazú's overlooked Paraguayan cousin.

Local tip: Almost nobody who comes to see Iguazú knows this exists, so on a weekday you can have a serious waterfall largely to yourself for a fraction of the price. There is a viewing platform right at the lip and a zip line across the gorge.

Landmark · Hernandarias, ~15 km north

The Paraguayan side of one of the largest hydroelectric plants on earth, jointly owned with Brazil.

Local tip: The Paraguayan tour is cheaper and less crowded than the Brazilian one and takes you to the same dam. Go on a day the spillway is open if you can — the schedule is published — and pair it with the ecological reserve on the same side.

Neighborhood · Seven kilometres inland from the bridge

Where the city actually lives: shopping centres, clinics, restaurants and residential streets strung along the highway.

Local tip: This is the answer to 'where do people who work here go in the evening', and it is not the microcentro. Everything after about Km 4 empties of shoppers and fills with residents; the further out, the quieter and cheaper.

Food · Off the microcentro grid

The everyday market where the city buys food rather than electronics — produce, mandioca, chipa, and comedores serving lunch to market workers.

Local tip: The one part of central Ciudad del Este that is entirely for locals. Lunch at a comedor here costs a third of anything on the shopping streets and is the only place in the centre you will hear more Guaraní than Portuguese.

Nature · Along the Paraná below the centre

The riverfront walk and park on the Paraná, looking across to Brazil.

Local tip: Late afternoon, when the heat breaks and families come out with thermoses. It is the closest thing the city has to a civic space that is not about buying something, and the sunset over the river with Foz do Iguaçu's towers on the far bank is the local postcard.
