Cleveland levies 2.5% on income earned in the city, whether or not you live here, and employers withhold it. If you live in Cleveland and work elsewhere, Cleveland credits you for what the work city took, up to its own 2.5% — so you effectively pay the higher of the two rates, not the sum. If you live in a suburb and work downtown, the same logic runs in reverse. Nothing about this is visible on a job offer, and it can move your take-home by a percent or more depending on where you sign a lease.

Cleveland's tax is administered by the Central Collection Agency, which also serves around three dozen other municipalities. Roughly half the municipalities in Ohio use the Regional Income Tax Agency instead, and the rest collect their own. The three have different forms, different portals and different deadlines for estimated payments. Ask your municipality which one it uses in your first month, because nobody will tell you.

RITA requires an annual return from every resident aged 18 and over in its member municipalities, whether or not any tax is due and whether or not your employer withheld correctly. Newcomers reason that full withholding means no return is needed, skip it, and receive a non-filing notice a year later. It is the single most common Ohio administrative mistake.

Ohio gives new residents 30 days from establishing residency to transfer the driver licence, the vehicle title and the vehicle registration. The BMV sends no reminder. Establishing residency includes taking a job, signing a lease or enrolling a child in school, so the clock often starts before you think of yourself as having moved.

Lake-effect snow falls in narrow bands driven by wind direction over Lake Erie. The far west side and Lakewood can get roughly half what the eastern suburbs and Geauga County get in the same winter. If you are choosing between two otherwise similar neighbourhoods, this is a real and permanent difference — ask about the last three winters, not the county average.

A 2019 city ordinance requires residential rental units built before 1978 to hold a current Lead Safe Certificate, valid two years, filed with the city. Cleveland's housing stock is among the oldest in the country, so this covers most of what you will look at. Ask to see the certificate before you sign — it is a matter of public record and a landlord who cannot produce one is not compliant.
