Unlike Chile, the Sri Lankan employment route expects you to enter first and then apply for the Residence Visa within the period of stay granted at the port of entry.

Things most newcomers don’t know

The Digital Nomad Visa is months old, and the income threshold is still moving.

It launched in February 2026. The Department publishes the USD 500 fee and the 12-month renewable validity clearly, but the minimum monthly income has already been reported at different levels since launch and secondary sources disagree. On a programme this new, verify the figure with the Department directly rather than trusting any article — including ours — on the number.

The per-dependant fee makes this expensive for families.

USD 500 applies separately to the main applicant, the spouse and each dependant. Most nomad visas charge a reduced family rate or a single household fee. A couple with two children pays USD 2,000 a year before anything else, which changes the arithmetic against Thailand or Malaysia considerably.

A residence visa is granted for exactly one purpose, and that is enforced.

The Immigrants and Emigrants Act prohibits engaging in any employment, paid or unpaid, or any trade or business other than the one specified in your visa. Taking on side work, even unpaid, is a breach rather than a grey area. Changing employers requires a new visa, not an amendment.

Poya days close the government once a month.

Every full moon is a public holiday. Immigration offices, banks and ministries shut, which regularly catches people scheduling visa appointments or renewals. Check the Poya calendar before booking anything official — the dates move each year with the lunar cycle.

Common mistakes to avoid

Planning around a Digital Nomad Visa income figure from a secondary source on a programme launched in February 2026.
Budgeting one visa fee for a family — it is USD 500 each, including every dependant.
Taking any work outside the single purpose your residence visa specifies.
Assuming a job change is an amendment rather than a fresh visa application.
