There is no first-time registration counter anywhere outside the capital. Every non-EEA newcomer in the State books through the online customer portal and attends the ISD Registration Office at Burgh Quay, Dublin 2 in person — a 260 km round trip from Cork, on a 90-day clock, for a €300 card. Appointments are normally available within two to three weeks, so book on the day you land and plan a Dublin day out around it. Renewals are online, which is the good news; the bad news is that ISD's renewal processing has been running past 17 weeks for some categories.

Ireland's rent control caps increases inside a tenancy, which means sitting tenants and arrivals live in two different markets. In Q4 2025 the RTB's standardised average for a new Cork City tenancy was €1,756 a month against €1,413 for an existing one — €343 a month, or 24%, purely for being new. Anyone who tells you what they pay is telling you about a tenancy you cannot have.

Cork's pharma and medtech cluster is in the harbour — Ringaskiddy, Little Island, Carrigtwohill, Currabinny — Apple is at Hollyhill on the northern edge, and Dell is out at Ovens. The city boundary was redrawn in 2019 and Ballincollig, Blarney, Glanmire, Douglas and Rochestown moved from Cork County Council into Cork City Council. The CSO will not even compare the 2016 and 2022 city populations because of it. Which authority you are in decides your bin and parking regime, your planning authority, your housing list — and, because each local authority sets its own Local Property Tax adjustment factor, potentially your property tax rate on two houses a mile apart.

Cork's humour is dry, fast and relentlessly self-assured about the city's standing relative to the capital. Mutual mockery — slagging — is how people signal they like you, and taking it earnestly reads worse than giving it badly. Order a Beamish or a Murphy's rather than a Guinness for your first round and you will have said something useful about yourself without opening your mouth.
