Confirm your employer is an IND-recognised sponsor before signing
The highly skilled migrant route is legally open only to employers on the IND's recognised sponsor register. The province, the larger banks and insurers and the hospital are all established sponsors; a mid-sized logistics operator or a regional accountancy firm may never have filed a permit. If the company is not on the register, this route does not exist for you regardless of your qualifications. The IND's legal decision period is 90 days and recognised-sponsor filings are usually decided well inside it.

Book the gemeente first-registration appointment from abroad
Registration from abroad is a specific appointment type at gemeente 's-Hertogenbosch, separate from an ordinary change of address, and it needs your original documents. Book as soon as your tenancy start date is fixed. This appointment is what produces the BSN, and the BSN is the critical path for your salary, insurance and bank account.

Book the IND desk appointment separately
The IND desk here handles applications, biometrics, endorsement stickers and residence-document collection by appointment. It is a different organisation from the gemeente with its own online planner, so the two appointments do not coordinate themselves. The compensation is that both are in the same city and, if you time them right, can be done in one day — which residents of most of Brabant and Gelderland cannot manage.

Attend, register in the BRP and collect your BSN
Bring your identity document, residence permit card or MVV where applicable, your signed Den Bosch tenancy contract and your original birth certificate. Registration in the Basisregistratie Personen produces the BSN. If your address is a room in someone else's home you also need the main occupant's written consent and a copy of their ID, which trips people up on the day.

Check whether the Rotterdamwet applies to your address
In the Hambaken, Hinthamerpoort-Zuid and the Gestelse buurt, taking a housing-corporation home requires a huisvestingsvergunning granted on income and background criteria. This is a housing rule, not a registration rule — BRP registration records where you actually live and is not conditional on the permit — but occupying without one where it is required is unlawful for you and the landlord. The designations are set out in the current Huisvestingsverordening; check it for the specific address rather than relying on a listing.

Things most newcomers don’t know

Having an IND desk in your own city is worth more than it sounds, and it is not the same as an expat centre.

Expat centres in Eindhoven, Utrecht, Groningen and elsewhere combine municipal registration with IND services in one meeting, but only for recognised-sponsor knowledge workers and their families. A full IND desk, of which there are four in the country, handles a broader range of applications and categories. If your situation is not the standard kennismigrant case — a family member on a different basis, a change of purpose, an application outside the sponsor's filing — the desk is where it gets resolved, and yours is a bus ride away.

Two appointments, two organisations, one city — and people book only one.

Because Den Bosch has both the gemeente and an IND desk, newcomers reasonably assume they are dealing with a single process. They are not: the municipality registers you in the BRP and issues the BSN, the IND handles the permit and the biometrics, and neither books the other. The saving is travel, not steps. Book both as soon as your tenancy start date is fixed, and try to put them on the same day.

The Rotterdamwet designation here is narrower than Rotterdam's, and narrower than people assume.

's-Hertogenbosch applies selective housing allocation in three named neighbourhoods and, as written in the housing ordinance, to housing-corporation dwellings and plots there — not to every private let in the postcode. Rotterdam's regime is much more extensive. The practical advice is the same in both cities: ask which regime the specific address falls under before signing, because the answer is a property-level fact rather than a neighbourhood-level one.

The expat scheme has its own wage norm, separate from the IND salary threshold, and a package can clear one and fail the other.

The IND assesses the highly skilled migrant requirement on your contractual gross salary. The Belastingdienst applies a different minimum taxable-salary norm for the expat ruling, and that norm is being raised for people who entered from 2024 onward. The two figures are set by different bodies, indexed on different schedules and published separately, so an offer engineered to hit one can miss the other. Have payroll confirm both current figures against your offer in writing before you sign.

Common mistakes to avoid

Assuming the IND desk and the gemeente are one process because they are in one city, and turning up having booked only one.
Signing for a corporation home in the Hambaken, Hinthamerpoort-Zuid or the Gestelse buurt without checking the huisvestingsvergunning position.
Signing for a room whose main occupant will not give written consent for you to register, which leaves you legally unregistered.
Bringing a birth certificate that has not been legalised or apostilled and translated, which the gemeente can and does refuse.
Assuming any employer can file a highly skilled migrant permit — only IND-recognised sponsors can.
