The driver licence is a STATE matter and every driver licence office visit is by appointment — walk-ins are not offered, and Denver metro appointments book out, so make one the week you arrive. Registering your car is a COUNTY matter with its own 90-day deadline (CRS 42-2-103(4)(a)(1)), handled by your Clerk & Recorder; no state driver licence office can do it. Counties set their own hours and some take walk-ins, so check yours rather than assuming the appointment-only rule applies there too.

Unlike California, which waives nothing for anyone, Colorado has arrangements with a small number of countries that skip the written and driving tests. Japan is the clearest example: you present an original Verification Certificate of Driver License issued by the Consul General of Japan in Denver within the previous three months. If your country is on the list, the process collapses from weeks to one appointment.

Denver is a mile above sea level. Expect breathlessness on stairs, disrupted sleep, faster dehydration and alcohol hitting roughly one-and-a-half times as hard for your first two weeks. UV exposure is around 25% stronger than at sea level — sunburn in February on a ski slope is routine. Drink far more water than feels necessary and take the first fortnight of exercise gently.

Colorado taxes income at a single flat rate, and Denver levies no city income tax — though it does charge a small monthly occupational privilege tax on employees earning above a threshold. Colorado's TABOR provisions also periodically return surplus revenue to taxpayers, which can reduce the effective rate in a given year. It is one of the more benign big-city tax positions in the country.

SSA verifies your status against DHS records that lag entry by one to two weeks, so an immediate visit usually wastes the trip. Only work-authorised people qualify; everyone else files IRS Form W-7 for an ITIN. The card is free.

Denver built apartments aggressively through the 2020s and the market loosened as a result — concessions like a free month are common in newer buildings, and negotiating is realistic. This is unusual among fast-growing US cities and it will not last forever, but while it holds, do not accept the advertised rent without asking what else is on the table.
