Registration slots are released through the city's online system across the district offices. Take any district rather than waiting for the nearest, complete the form beforehand, and check early in the morning when cancellations are released.

Whoever provides the accommodation must confirm your move-in in writing within two weeks by law. With a corporate landlord this usually comes as a standard form; in a sublet it is what gets forgotten. Without it the appointment is wasted.

The appointment is short. Your employer, bank, health insurer and the Ausländerbehörde will each want the Meldebescheinigung, so take several copies rather than returning for them.

Treat the religion field as a tax election
Declaring membership of a recognised church starts automatic church tax at 9% of your income tax in Saxony. Declaring none is lawful and straightforward. Leaving later requires a formal appointment and a fee and takes effect only from the following month.

Start qualification recognition early if you hold a vocational credential
Germany runs a formal Anerkennung process comparing a foreign vocational qualification against the German equivalent, run through the chambers of commerce and crafts and the state authorities. For technician, electrical and skilled-trade roles it is often the practical gate on being hired at the right grade. It takes months, and it can be started from abroad.

Submit the residence permit or EU Blue Card application immediately after registration rather than waiting. If the entry visa expires while the file is pending, ask for a Fiktionsbescheinigung, which preserves your right to remain and to work.

Things most newcomers don’t know

For technical and trade roles, qualification recognition matters more than the visa does.

Germany's labour market is organised around formal vocational credentials to a degree few other countries match, and a foreign technician's certificate has no standing until it has been compared against the German equivalent through the Anerkennung process. Employers in the Dresden fabs will hire you either way, but the grade, the pay band and sometimes the permit route depend on it. It takes months and can be started from abroad, which almost nobody does.

Saxony charges 9% church tax, decided by one line on the registration form.

The clerk asks the religion question as routine demography and most newcomers answer it that way, not realising it produces an automatic payroll deduction of 9% of their income tax for as long as membership stands. Only Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg charge the lower 8%. Leaving afterwards costs a registry fee and takes effect only from the following month, so a careless January answer costs a full year of it.

Ask for the EU Blue Card by name rather than accepting the general work permit.

The Blue Card gives faster access to a settlement permit, immediate work rights for an accompanying spouse and more freedom to change employer. Both thresholds are pegged to the pension contribution ceiling and reset every January — for 2026 the general figure is EUR 50,700 gross and the reduced one EUR 45,934.20 for shortage occupations including engineering and IT and for recent graduates — so check BAMF for the current year rather than a figure in print. Dresden salaries are lower than Munich's, so whether you clear the threshold is a genuine question here rather than a formality.

The chip build-out has changed the queue at the immigration office.

Dresden's fabs and their equipment suppliers are recruiting internationally on a scale the city has not seen, and the Ausländerbehörde's caseload has grown with it. Employers with large intakes often have established channels; individual arrivals do not. Submit as soon as you are registered, keep every document scanned, and ask for the bridging certificate rather than assuming your visa's expiry date is a wall.
