Get a block heater and a stall with an outlet
Below about −15 °C an engine block heater plugged in for a few hours before you drive is what makes a reliable start. Rental buildings, workplaces and the university all provide powered stalls, and many alternate the outlets on and off across the hour to spread the electrical load — so check the schedule where you park rather than assuming continuous power.

Register for parking ban alerts before the first snowfall
A declared Phase 1 ban takes effect at 7 pm on the day it is announced and clears arterials, collectors and bus routes city-wide around the clock for several days. Phase 2 extends it to residential streets with white seasonal signs. The ticket is $250; towing to the nearest cleared road is free. City alerts by text or app are the only realistic way to keep up.

Things most newcomers don’t know

A block heater and a powered stall are equipment here, not comfort.

Edmonton is far enough north that multi-day stretches below −25 °C are routine, and at those temperatures engine oil thickens enough that a cold start is hard on the engine and often simply fails. A block heater plugged in for a few hours beforehand solves it. What newcomers miss is that many institutional car parks alternate their outlets — some stalls powered from the hour to the half-hour, others the other way — precisely to manage the load. Plugging in is not enough; check when your stall is actually live.

The parking ban is the most reliable way for a newcomer to lose $250.

The two-phase seasonal ban is declared with little warning, Phase 1 starting at 7 pm the same evening on arterials, collectors and bus routes, and Phase 2 later extending to signed residential streets. A car left on a bus route overnight during a Phase 1 ban is ticketed and may be towed, and neither the sign nor the street looks any different from the day before. Sign up for the city's alerts in your first week; this is not something you can reason out from the signage.

Alberta insurance is fully private, so shopping around actually changes the price.

Arrivals from British Columbia or Quebec, where the basic product is a public monopoly, treat the first quote as the price. In Alberta it is not — quotes for an identical driver and vehicle vary widely between insurers, and a broker quoting several will usually beat a direct application. This is a genuinely different consumer market from the ones on either side of it.
