Fresnoruns on a handful of strong industries. If you’re job-hunting or weighing a move, here’s where the opportunities (and the big-name employers) are.
Top industries & employers
Agriculture & food processing
Family and corporate farming operations across Fresno County, Sun-Maid, packing houses, cold storage, irrigation and ag-equipment firms, Fresno County Farm Bureau
The USDA's 2022 Census of Agriculture put Fresno County first in the United States for the market value of agricultural products sold — grapes, almonds, pistachios, milk, poultry, tomatoes and garlic. Statewide, California's farms and ranches took USD 61.2 billion in cash receipts in 2024. Everything downstream of that — processing, logistics, equipment, water engineering, agronomy — is a Fresno job market.
Health care
Community Regional Medical Center, Saint Agnes Medical Center, Kaiser Permanente, Valley Children's Healthcare, UCSF Fresno
Community Regional runs the only Level I trauma centre between Los Angeles and Sacramento and the region's burn centre, and UCSF's Fresno branch campus trains a large share of the doctors who stay in the Valley. Health care is the largest non-agricultural employer here and it serves a catchment far beyond the city.
Logistics & distribution
Distribution centres along Highway 99 and the 180 corridor, Amazon, Ulta Beauty, refrigerated trucking and rail freight
Fresno sits halfway between Los Angeles and the Bay Area on the state's freight spine, with land and labour costs neither end can match. That combination has pulled a lot of warehousing and cold-chain distribution into the county over the past decade.
Education & public sector
California State University Fresno, Fresno City College, Fresno Unified and Clovis Unified school districts, County of Fresno, City of Fresno
Fresno State is the anchor institution — a large CSU campus with the state's agricultural sciences programme attached — and the two school districts are between them among the biggest employers in the county. Fresno Unified is one of the largest districts in California.
Construction & infrastructure
California High-Speed Rail Authority, regional contractors, water district and irrigation engineering firms
The high-speed rail project's Central Valley construction is headquartered here, and the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act has created a genuine and long-running engineering programme around recharge basins, metering and water district planning. Both are decade-scale employment rather than a boom.
Government-adjacent legal & professional services
Fresno County Superior Court, the federal Eastern District of California courthouse, regional law and accountancy firms
Fresno is the regional centre for a large and mostly rural part of California, so the courts, professional services and agency offices here serve an area far larger than the metro — which produces a steadier white-collar job market than a city this size would otherwise have.
