Plan for a power cut in fire season and in a heatwave
California utilities carry out Public Safety Power Shutoffs when wind and fire risk demand it, and long heat events strain the grid. A cut takes home broadband down even when the mobile network stays up on generators. A charged power bank, a hotspot allowance on the mobile plan and a known air-conditioned public building — a library, a cooling centre — are the standard local preparations, and the cooling centre is the part that is genuinely about safety rather than convenience.

Things most newcomers don’t know

A power cut here is a heat problem, not an inconvenience.

Fresno runs above 38°C for long stretches and Californian utilities also carry out deliberate Public Safety Power Shutoffs when fire conditions demand it. Losing power in July is a health situation for older people, small children and anyone with a chronic condition, and it takes home broadband with it. Know where the nearest cooling centre and library are before you need them, and keep a power bank charged.

The US has no SIM registration of any kind.

Most countries in this app require passport registration to activate a SIM and several require biometrics. The US requires nothing at all for prepaid — you can buy one with cash and never give a name. Arriving from India, Nigeria or the Gulf, the total absence of paperwork reads like an oversight. It is deliberate.

Coverage thins fast once you head into the Sierra.

Fresno itself is well served, but the drive up the 41 to Yosemite or the 180 into Kings Canyon crosses long stretches with nothing, and the national parks themselves have very limited service by design. Given how many weekends here end up in the mountains, download maps offline and tell somebody your route — it is a normal local habit rather than paranoia.
