Residence visa, Emirates ID, and the free-zone self-sponsorship route
The mechanics are federal. Your sponsor obtains the MoHRE work permit and the ICP entry permit; you complete a medical fitness test and Emirates ID biometrics; the residence permit is then issued electronically with no sticker in the passport โ Dubai is the one emirate that still issues those, which is why so many guides describe a stamp you will never receive. Your Emirates ID is the key to a bank account, a postpaid SIM, a registered tenancy and a driving licence. What is distinctive here is who the sponsor often is: Fujairah's two free zones licence a company that then sponsors you and your family, and Creative City in particular is aimed at media, consultancy and freelance activity, which makes self-sponsorship a realistic route for a remote worker rather than a corporate luxury.

If your licence comes from one of the approved countries โ the GCC, the UK, most of the EU and EEA, the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea and others โ you can exchange it for a UAE licence with no lessons and no road test: an eye test, a legal translation if it is not in English or Arabic, and the fee. Holders of other licences must open a traffic file, train at a licensed institute and pass theory, yard and road tests. Watch the validity: the federal portal says a NEW licence runs two years at 21 or over and one year below 21, while a RENEWED licence runs five years for expatriate residents and ten only for UAE and GCC citizens. Fujairah's own driving realities are the mountain passes to the rest of the country, the wadi crossings that flood, and a coast road that repeatedly leaves the emirate.

A personal current account needs an Emirates ID, a passport with the residence permit, a salary certificate or employment letter, and proof of address. UAE banks are Central Bank licensed and operate across all seven emirates, so living in Fujairah does not restrict which bank you use โ only how close the nearest branch is, and the branch network on the east coast is thin. Ask specifically for a salary-transfer account: it normally waives the minimum balance of roughly AED 3,000โ5,000 that otherwise carries a monthly fall-below fee. The genuine difficulty here is corporate: opening a business account for a new free-zone company is a slow, documentation-heavy compliance exercise, and banks routinely decline small free-zone entities with no local substance.

Health insurance is mandatory for every UAE resident and is a condition of issuing and renewing your residence permit, but the mandating authority differs by emirate. Dubai has its own scheme under the Dubai Health Authority and Abu Dhabi one under its Department of Health. Fujairah has neither, which is exactly why the federal basic health insurance scheme took effect on 1 January 2025 through MoHRE and the Ministry of Health and Prevention, covering private-sector workers and domestic workers in Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah. The employer buys it. In an emirate this size the network question matters more than the premium โ and so does the honest answer to where you would go for anything serious, because the country's largest specialist centres are on the other side of the Hajar mountains.

SIMs are registered biometrically against your Emirates ID, or against a passport for a visitor line, and are sold at operator shops, kiosks and self-service machines. Prepaid is instant; postpaid needs an Emirates ID and usually a salary certificate. Residential fibre coverage is split between the two operators building by building, so you generally get whichever is installed rather than the one with the better offer. Fujairah's own wrinkles are geographic: coverage is good along the coastal strip and the main roads and drops away sharply in the wadis and the mountain interior, and in the far north around Dibba a handset left on automatic network selection can register on an Omani network and start billing international roaming.

The UAE levies no personal income tax and Fujairah adds none. VAT is 5% on most goods and services. Federal corporate tax applies at 9% to taxable profits above AED 375,000, and a free-zone company only obtains the 0% rate on qualifying income if it meets substance and qualifying-activity conditions โ which matters disproportionately here, because the free-zone licence is the reason many foreigners choose this emirate. Instead of a pension, expatriate employees accrue an end-of-service gratuity calculated on basic salary, so the basic-versus-allowances split in your offer is worth more than it looks. The Tax Residency Certificate has three alternative routes under Cabinet Decision 85 of 2022, not just the 183-day one.

What to know before you go
You are on the other side of the mountains, and that is the whole point
CriticalFujairah is the only emirate located completely on the UAE's eastern coast, along the Gulf of Oman โ the country's only access to the Indian Ocean. The Hajar range separates it from Dubai and Sharjah, so the drive to Dubai is 1.5 to 2 hours through or around mountains rather than a run down a motorway. Everything follows from that geography: the weather, the port, the rainfall, the pace. Do not move here imagining a cheap Dubai suburb; treat it as a different place that happens to share a country.
The east coast is not all Fujairah โ Sharjah owns pieces of it
CriticalThe UAE government's own description of Fujairah notes that it borders Sharjah to the south as well as to the west. That is because Khor Fakkan, Kalba and Dibba Al-Hisn are Sharjah territory sitting on this same Gulf of Oman coast, and Dibba itself is divided between Fujairah, Sharjah and Oman. It matters practically: Sharjah prohibits alcohol outright and runs its own tenancy law and municipality fee, so driving twenty minutes up the coast road can put you under an entirely different legal regime without a sign telling you. Know which emirate you are in before you assume the rules travel with you.
The weather is the best in the country, and that is officially the case
Importantu.ae states plainly that because of its easterly location, Fujairah's climate is more moderate than that of Abu Dhabi and Dubai. The emirate's own portal adds that rainfall is higher than the rest of the UAE, partly because of the mountains encircling it and partly because the prevailing easterlies bring water-laden clouds off the warm Indian Ocean, and that December to March daytime temperatures average around 25 ยฐC and rarely exceed 30 ยฐC. Summer is still a Gulf summer. But the winter here is a genuinely different proposition, and it is why the rest of the country drives over at weekends.
This is a port and industrial economy, not a service one
ImportantThe Port of Fujairah sits roughly 70 nautical miles from the Strait of Hormuz โ and crucially, outside it โ which is why it exists at all. Fujairah is one of the world's three largest bunkering hubs, oil storage has grown from 550,000 cubic metres in 1994 to almost 18 million, and ADNOC's 360 km crude pipeline from Habshan has been pumping here since 2012 with a capacity of 1.8 million barrels a day. If you are in shipping, oil trading, marine services, logistics or industrial engineering, this is a serious place to work. If you are not, the job market is small and you should have an offer before you arrive.
Everything administrative is Fujairah's own or federal โ never Dubai's
CriticalTenancy contracts register with Fujairah Municipality, not with Dubai's Ejari, Abu Dhabi's Tawtheeq or RAK Municipality. Electricity and water come from Etihad Water and Electricity, the federal utility for the northern emirates, not from DEWA, ADDC or SEWA. Residency runs through the federal ICP, not Dubai's GDRFA and not Abu Dhabi's TAMM. Health insurance is the federal MoHRE basic scheme that took effect on 1 January 2025 โ the one that expressly excludes Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Almost every UAE guide online is really a Dubai guide.
Wadis are beautiful and they flood
Good to knowThe mountains that give Fujairah its rain also give it flash floods, and the rain arrives hardest in exactly the months that make the emirate pleasant. Wadi beds fill fast and from rain that fell somewhere you cannot see. Do not camp in a wadi bed, do not drive into moving water, and check the forecast before a mountain trip in winter. Mobile coverage in the interior is patchy, so tell someone your route.

The anchor of the emirate. Fujairah is one of the world's three largest bunkering hubs, with FOIZ and the port forming the Middle East's largest commercial storage capacity for crude and refined product โ almost 18 million cubic metres, up from 550,000 in 1994.

The anchorage takes up to 174 vessels at a time and around 12,000 calls a year for bunkering, ship supply, repair, inspection and crew change โ a dense cluster of maritime jobs you will not find on the Arabian Gulf side.

The mountains are an industry. Dibba Port's deep-water bulk terminal opened commercially on 1 March 2024 to export limestone, aggregate and clinker to the Indian subcontinent, with quarries under 50 km away.

Where to go in Fujairah
Al Bidya Mosque
Landmark ยท Al Bidya, north of Fujairah city on the coast road
A small mud-and-stone mosque with four domes on a hillside above the sea, described by the Fujairah government as the oldest mosque in the UAE.
Local tip: It is tiny and takes ten minutes, but climb the watchtowers on the ridge behind it first โ the view down the coast is the best free thing in the emirate. Dress modestly; it is still in use.
Wadi Al Wurayah
Nature ยท Mountains between Khor Fakkan and Bidiyah
A 31,000-acre protected mountain reserve holding what the Fujairah government describes as the UAE's only waterfall, along with pools, wildlife and deep canyons.
Local tip: Access is regulated as a protected area, so check what is currently open before you set out rather than turning up. Go in winter, and never into a wadi bed when rain is forecast anywhere upstream.
The Fujairah Corniche & fish market

A working seafront with a morning fish market where the catch comes off Gulf of Oman boats, backed by a walkable corniche.
Local tip: Buy at the market and take it to one of the stalls that will grill it for you on the spot โ it is the cheapest genuinely excellent meal in the emirate, and the fish is from a different sea than anything sold in Dubai.
Fujairah Fort & Heritage Village

The emirate's old stone fort, restored above the date-palm settlement it once guarded, with a heritage village alongside and the Ain Al Madhab gardens and springs nearby.
Local tip: Late afternoon, when the light hits the mud-brick and the heat drops. The fort ties directly to the emirate's own founding story โ the Al Sharqi rulers date their modern history to 1808.
Snoopy Island & the Al Aqah dive coast
Hidden gemNature ยท Al Aqah, on the northern coast
A rock island a short swim offshore with the most accessible coral and turtle snorkelling in the country, fronted by the emirate's resort strip.
Local tip: Swim out early before the boats and the wind. This is Gulf of Oman water โ cooler, clearer and with far better visibility than anything on the Arabian Gulf side.
Dibba and the northern coast
Neighborhood ยท The far north of the emirate
The town at the top of the coast, historically divided between Fujairah, Sharjah and Oman, and the gateway to the Musandam fjords.
Local tip: Know which Dibba you are in โ Dibba Al-Fujairah, Sharjah's Dibba Al-Hisn and Oman's Dibba Al-Baya are contiguous and the rules differ in each. Boat trips north into the fjords leave from here.
