What to know before you go
If you work for an international organisation, you are on a different legal track — plan for it early
CriticalStaff of the UN, WHO, ILO, ITU, WTO, WIPO, ICRC and the rest hold an FDFA carte de légitimation instead of a cantonal permit. It exempts you from Swiss income tax on your organisation salary, from AVS, and from compulsory Swiss health insurance. It also means you are not accruing a Permit C: card years count toward the ten-year residence requirement for naturalisation, but not toward the settlement permit you must actually hold to apply — unless you already held a B or C before you swapped it for the card. People discover this after fifteen years. If long-term Swiss status matters to you, raise it with your HR and the OCPM in year one, not year fifteen.
Register within 14 days — in Geneva that means the OCPM, not your commune
CriticalMost Swiss cantons send you to the town hall. Geneva centralises arrival formalities at the Office cantonal de la population et des migrations. The registration date starts your three-month health-insurance clock, produces the permit card banks ask for, and is the reference for your twelve-month driving-licence deadline. Book the appointment before you fly; the slots are not always next week.
Geneva has the most expensive health premiums in Switzerland and they are a personal bill
CriticalFor 2026 the average adult premium in Geneva is about CHF 586 a month, against a national adult average of CHF 465.30 — the highest in the country. Watch which figure a comparison is quoting: across all age groups Geneva averages CHF 489.80, which puts it second behind Ticino's CHF 501.50, but the adult number is the one that lands on your account. There is no employer scheme and no payroll deduction: you buy it yourself, per person, children included. Cantonal subsides exist and are means-tested through your tax data. Premiums are re-set every autumn for the following January, so compare on the federal priminfo tool rather than trusting a figure in a relocation pack.
Living in France to save money changes your legal status, not just your rent
CriticalCross the border and you need a G permit, your health cover becomes a one-off irrevocable choice between Swiss LAMal and the French system that you must make within three months, and your tax lands under the Geneva-specific 1973 arrangement rather than the one Vaud and Basel use. Rent and space are genuinely better on the French side. The admin is a different job, not a smaller one.
Which Geneva commune you live in moves your tax bill by a lot
ImportantCantonal tax is multiplied by communal centimes additionnels set locally. The City of Geneva levies 45.5 centimes; Genthod is around 25 and Chancy around 51. That spread is worth several percent of net income on the same salary, across communes a tram ride apart. The rates are published in an annual cantonal decree — check the current year before signing a lease.
Geneva is the last canton without a pay-per-bag rubbish tax — but sorting is still enforced
Good to knowVaud, Basel-Stadt and almost everywhere else make you buy official taxed bags. Geneva funds collection from general taxation instead and has fought to keep it that way. You still separate paper, PET, glass, aluminium, organics and textiles at street-corner points, and building caretakers will tell you about it if you don't.
