Jobs in Gothenburg

The sectors hiring, the employers to know, and how work really runs here.

Gothenburgruns on a handful of strong industries. If you’re job-hunting or weighing a move, here’s where the opportunities (and the big-name employers) are.

Top industries & employers

Automotive & mobility

Volvo Cars, Volvo Group, Polestar, Lynk & Co, CEVT, Zenseact

Volvo Cars is the largest private employer in the region with over 16,000 people in Gothenburg, and its global headquarters and main plant are both at Torslanda. The whole cluster — trucks, cars, electrification and autonomous driving — sits within about fifteen kilometres of the city centre.

Mobility software & research

Lindholmen Science Park, Zenseact, Semcon, Ericsson, Nvidia

Lindholmen Science Park on Hisingen was founded in 2000 by Chalmers and the City of Gothenburg and now hosts around 400 companies, most of them working on some part of the vehicle-software problem. It is the closest thing Sweden has to a purpose-built mobility campus.

Shipping, logistics & the port

Port of Gothenburg, Stena Line, Maersk, Schenker, DFDS

The Port of Gothenburg is the largest port in Scandinavia and handles more than half of Sweden's container traffic. It is also the only Swedish port with direct deep-sea services to Asia and North America, which is why so much logistics employment sits here rather than in Stockholm.

Life sciences & pharmaceuticals

AstraZeneca, Sahlgrenska University Hospital, Mölnlycke Health Care, Getinge

AstraZeneca's Mölndal site immediately south of the city is one of the company's three global strategic R&D centres, and it sits next to Sahlgrenska, one of the largest hospitals in northern Europe. The two together anchor a research corridor with no equivalent outside Stockholm.

Industrial engineering & bearings

SKF, Volvo Penta, Alfa Laval, ABB

SKF was founded in Gothenburg in 1907, still has its head office here, and its early profits are what capitalised Volvo — the two companies' histories are the same history. Heavy engineering is not a legacy sector here, it is the live core of the regional economy.

Events, culture & tourism

Liseberg, Svenska Mässan, Gothenburg Film Festival, Way Out West

Liseberg is the most visited attraction in the Nordics and the Svenska Mässan complex beside it makes Gothenburg Sweden's trade-fair city. The Gothenburg Film Festival in late January is the largest film festival in Scandinavia and a genuine reason the city does not feel dead in midwinter.
