Validate your VLS-TS within three months of arrival
Done online with the visa number, your date of entry and an electronic tax stamp. This is the step that converts the visa into a valid residence permit. Missing the window puts you out of status, and the remedy is far worse than the fifteen-minute procedure you skipped.

Create and monitor your ANEF account from week one
Nearly all immigration procedures now run through the national platform. Requests for further documents appear inside the account rather than arriving by post or by email, so check it weekly whenever a procedure is live.

For anything ANEF does not handle, use the Isère's Démarches Simplifiées form
Since 12 March 2025 the préfecture books appointments for non-ANEF permits through a request form on Démarches Simplifiées rather than a public calendar you have to refresh. You submit the request and a slot is allocated to you. This is a different mechanism from most départements and it means refreshing a booking page is the wrong strategy here.

If you are a student or researcher, use the campus permanences
Préfecture agents hold two permanences a week on the Université Grenoble Alpes campus, on Monday and Tuesday from 9:30 to 15:30, for students and comparable profiles. Given how much of this city's international population is at the university or the research institutes, this is the single most useful local fact in this guide — and it is barely advertised outside the campus.

Collect a finished permit without booking anything
The préfecture operates counter collection for manufactured permits on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday mornings, roughly 9:00 to 11:00, once you have received the SMS saying the document is ready. Do not go before the SMS and do not hunt for an appointment slot to do it.

Start renewals at the earliest permitted date and screenshot everything
A renewal is filed at the earliest four months and at the latest two months before your current permit expires. Use the front of that window — an early application produces a récépissé that protects your status while the file is considered. Screenshot each submission: being able to show what you sent and when is your only leverage if a file stalls.

Things most newcomers don’t know

The préfecture holds office hours on the university campus, and it is not advertised where newcomers look.

Two permanences a week, Monday and Tuesday from 9:30 to 15:30, staffed by préfecture agents on the Université Grenoble Alpes campus for students and comparable profiles. In a city where a very large share of the international population arrives through the university or the research institutes, that is the difference between a conversation with a caseworker and a month of silence — and people who came for a job at a research institute rather than to enrol often never hear it exists.

In the Isère you request an appointment; you do not hunt for one.

Since March 2025 non-ANEF appointments are booked through a Démarches Simplifiées form: you submit a request and a slot is assigned. Applicants arriving from départements where the ritual is refreshing a calendar at midnight waste weeks doing the wrong thing, and the commercial 'appointment finder' sites that monetise that ritual have nothing to sell against this mechanism.

The three-month validation deadline is the one that quietly ends people's stay.

A long-stay visa marked VLS-TS is not a residence permit until you validate it online and pay the tax stamp. Miss the window and you are out of status with no simple remedy — you may have to leave France and restart. It looks like a formality precisely because the visa in your passport appears to be doing the job already.

ANEF posts document requests inside the account and tells nobody.

The platform does not reliably notify you when a caseworker asks for something, and there is no letter in the post. Files sit untouched for months because an applicant never saw a request they could have answered the same day. Check the account weekly during any live procedure and treat email as unreliable rather than as the channel.

Common mistakes to avoid

Missing the three-month deadline to validate a VLS-TS online.
Refreshing a booking calendar when the Isère allocates slots from a submitted request form instead.
Being a researcher or a graduate and never discovering the campus permanences.
Going to the préfecture to collect a permit before receiving the SMS that it is ready.
Applying for renewal too late and falling between a lapsed permit and an undecided file.
