Jobs in Hamilton

The sectors hiring, the employers to know, and how work really runs here.

Hamiltonruns on a handful of strong industries. If you’re job-hunting or weighing a move, here’s where the opportunities (and the big-name employers) are.

Top industries & employers

Health care & hospitals

Hamilton Health Sciences, St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton, McMaster University Medical Centre, Juravinski Cancer Centre, McMaster Children's Hospital

Hamilton Health Sciences is the largest employer in the region with roughly 18,000 staff, physicians and volunteers across the General, Juravinski, McMaster Children's and the west Hamilton sites. Between HHS and St. Joseph's, health care is the base of the local economy and the sector that hires most consistently.

Higher education & research

McMaster University, Mohawk College, Redeemer University, McMaster Innovation Park

McMaster is a research-intensive university with a medical school that gave the world problem-based learning, a nuclear research reactor on campus, and around 15,900 employees. McMaster Innovation Park has turned a former industrial site into the city's life-sciences and engineering cluster.

Steel & advanced manufacturing

ArcelorMittal Dofasco, Stelco (Cleveland-Cliffs), National Steel Car, ABB, Boston Scientific

Still thousands of well-paid jobs on the bay, and National Steel Car in the east end is one of the last railcar builders in North America. Treat it as a large mature sector rather than a growing one — Dofasco decommissioned one of its two remaining coke plants in 2026 and its electric-arc-furnace conversion has slipped badly.

Logistics, distribution & aviation

John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport, Canada Post, Purolator, Amazon, DHL, Maersk

The airport is a national overnight cargo hub rather than a passenger one, and the surrounding lands on the Mountain have filled with distribution. The port of Hamilton is the busiest on the Canadian Great Lakes by tonnage, moving steel inputs, grain and aggregate.

Public sector & municipal services

City of Hamilton, Hamilton Police Service, Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board, Hamilton Public Library

Because Hamilton is single-tier, everything a region would run elsewhere is run by the City — water, waste, public health, paramedics, housing and long-term care all sit in one organisation, which makes it one of the largest employers in the city.

Creative industries & film

Independent studios along James Street North, the Cotton Factory, Hamilton Film Office, Supercrawl

Cheap floor space in old industrial buildings did what cheap floor space always does. Hamilton is also one of the most-filmed cities in Canada, standing in for American cities on a scale that keeps a permanent crew base employed — you will hit a closed street for a shoot within your first month.
