Before you start
- Resident card, or passport with a valid visa evidencing authorised stay
- An Angolan NIF from the AGT
- Proof of address — atestado de residência and/or utility bills
- Proof of employment and a declaration of the origin of funds
- A passport-style colour photograph
Step-by-step
- 1
Get the NIF first
Every Angolan bank's checklist for a foreign individual starts with the NIF alongside the residence or visa document. Without it there is no account. Inland this takes longer than in Luanda, so start it the week you arrive rather than the week you need it.

Open in person, with a complete file, first time
BFA states that account opening is exclusively in person. Bring originals and copies of everything including the photograph and the source-of-funds declaration — the two items nobody warns you about and the two commonest reasons a visit fails. Here a failed visit is not an afternoon, it is a week.

Get the Multicaixa card, and plan around cash outside the city
Multicaixa — ATMs, shop terminals, Multicaixa Express on the phone — is what merchants accept in the city and it works well. Outside Huambo city, the market towns and the rural 52% of the province run on cash in small notes. Draw before you travel, not while you are there.

Settle the outbound-transfer question before payday
Angola operates exchange controls under the BNA, and moving salary out is a documented banking operation supported by your contract and payslips. Ask your bank in week one what evidence it wants, and ask your employer whether any part of the package is paid offshore. On NGO and research contracts the answer is often yes — but only if you ask before signing.

Keep a Luanda contact and, if you can, a second account
Blocked cards, KYC refreshes and transfer queries resolve faster where there are more branches and more senior staff. Keep documents current so a refresh never becomes urgent, and keep the name of someone at your bank in the capital as well as in Huambo.

Things most newcomers don’t know
Branch density is the whole local difference.
The rules are identical to Luanda's; the recovery options are not. Arriving with a complete file — including the photograph and the source-of-funds declaration — is worth far more here than in the capital, because the fallback of trying a different branch tomorrow barely exists.

Outside the city, this is still a cash province.
With 52% of the population rural and only about 30% of households on the electricity grid, terminal coverage in market towns is thin. Draw cash in the city before you travel, carry small notes, and do not assume a card will work at the far end of a field trip.

The exchange rate you get is not the reference rate you read.
The BNA publishes a daily reference — AOA 912.3845 to the dollar on 3 August 2026 — and banks quote around it. Under a managed float that gap decides how much of your salary survives conversion. Ask your bank for its rate.

Ask about offshore split pay before you sign.
Whether part of the package is paid outside Angola is the largest financial variable in the posting, and it cannot be renegotiated once the work visa is welded to the contract. On internationally funded contracts it is a normal request.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Trying to open an account before the NIF exists
- Arriving without the photograph or a current address proof
- Assuming card acceptance outside Huambo city
- Discovering the outbound-transfer documentation requirement months in
- Having only one bank relationship and no contact in Luanda
- Budgeting from the BNA reference rate rather than your bank's actual rate
