There is no post-arrival registration in the United States: your electronic I-94 record is your status. In the first weeks you need a Social Security number if work-authorised, or an ITIN if not. California's own clock is unusual in two ways. First, it is short and split: Vehicle Code section 12505 allows a new resident 10 days on an out-of-state licence, while a vehicle brought into the state must be registered within 20 days. Second, the 10 days evaporate entirely if you drive for employment — the same section says a new resident shall not operate a vehicle for employment without first obtaining a California licence, with no grace period. California also issues driving credentials without regard to immigration status, which is the opposite of Texas and is worth knowing if that applies to you. California splits the new-resident clock: 10 days for the driver licence under Vehicle Code 12505 and 20 days to register a vehicle brought into the state — with no grace period at all on the licence if you drive for employment. The inspection regime is statewide rather than county-by-county: California's Smog Check programme, run by the Bureau of Automotive Repair, applies across the state, with the newest model years exempt and a smog abatement fee charged instead. Register the vehicle and the DMV's fee is value-based, so an expensive car costs materially more to keep on the road here than in a flat-fee state. California has the highest top marginal income tax rate in the United States — 13.3% including the 1% Mental Health Services Tax on income above $1 million — and no city or county levies one on top. The line people miss is State Disability Insurance. Senate Bill 951 removed the taxable wage ceiling from 1 January 2024, and the Employment Development Department puts the 2026 withholding rate at 1.3%, so it applies to every dollar of wages rather than stopping at a cap. On the salaries Irvine actually pays, that is a substantial addition sitting outside the headline rate. Sales tax in Orange County runs at 7.75%, the regional floor. Property tax is where California is genuinely cheap in rate terms and expensive in practice: Proposition 13 caps the general levy at 1% of assessed value and limits annual increases in assessed value, but your assessed value is reset to the purchase price when you buy — so two identical houses on the same street can carry wildly different bills depending on when each was bought.

What to know before you go
California's SDI is 1.3% for 2026 and there is no wage ceiling at all
CriticalThis is the single most under-reported item on a California payslip and it matters more in Irvine than almost anywhere, because the salaries here are high. Senate Bill 951 removed the taxable wage limit for State Disability Insurance from 1 January 2024, so the contribution now applies to every dollar of wages rather than stopping at a cap. The Employment Development Department puts the 2026 withholding rate at 1.3%. On a $250,000 salary that is $3,250 a year that nobody mentions when they quote you California's 13.3% top marginal rate, and it is on top of that rate rather than inside it. Model it before you compare a California offer with a Texas one.
The 10-day licence rule does not apply if you drive for work — then there is no grace at all
CriticalCalifornia Vehicle Code section 12505 lets a new resident drive on an out-of-state licence for up to 10 days after establishing residency, and gives you 20 days to register a vehicle brought into the state. But the same section says a person shall not operate a motor vehicle for employment in California after establishing residency without first obtaining a California licence. There is no ten-day window for that. If your job involves driving at all — deliveries, site visits, care work, anything — get the appointment before you start. DMV appointments in Orange County book out, so treat the appointment, not the ten days, as the real deadline.
Medi-Cal changed on 1 January 2026 for adults with unsatisfactory immigration status
CriticalCalifornia had, uniquely, extended full-scope Medi-Cal to income-eligible adults regardless of immigration status. From 1 January 2026 new full-scope enrolment is frozen for adults with unsatisfactory immigration status: people already enrolled by 31 December 2025 keep their coverage and children can still enrol, but new adult applicants in that category are limited to restricted-scope emergency and pregnancy Medi-Cal, and monthly premiums have been introduced for some enrolled adults. This is a live budget matter and the details have moved more than once. If it applies to your household, read the Department of Health Care Services' own current guidance rather than any article — including this one — and get advice before assuming either way.
Irvine has no rent ordinance, and one landlord owns much of the market
CriticalThere is no local rent stabilisation in Irvine, so the only cap is California's statewide Tenant Protection Act: 5% plus the regional change in the cost of living, to a 10% ceiling, and only on buildings whose certificate of occupancy is more than 15 years old. In a city where a great deal of the stock is newer than that, the honest answer for many buildings is that there is no cap. The other half of the picture is unusual: the Irvine Company built the city and still owns and operates a very large share of its purpose-built apartments, so a large part of the rental market is one counterparty with one set of policies. That makes it unusually consistent and unusually hard to negotiate against. Ask in writing whether the unit is covered by the Tenant Protection Act before you sign.

ImportantIrvine's eastern villages — Portola Springs, Orchard Hills and the upper edges of Turtle Rock and Quail Hill — back onto the Santa Ana Mountains and the wildland-urban interface. CAL FIRE's Office of the State Fire Marshal republished fire hazard severity zone maps for Southern California in 2025, and the zones are mapped to parcel level. In the higher zones, home and renters' cover is harder to place and more expensive and some households end up on the California FAIR Plan. Check the zone for the exact address and get a real insurance quote before you commit, rather than pricing it off a central Irvine comparison. Your electricity has three parties, not one
ImportantSouthern California Edison owns the wires and does the billing, but Irvine is a founding member of the Orange County Power Authority, a community choice aggregator that buys the actual electricity on residents' behalf — currently serving Buena Park, Fullerton and Irvine with Fountain Valley joining. You are enrolled by default and may opt out back to SCE's own generation. Water is a third party again: the Irvine Ranch Water District is an independent special district, not a city department, and it is well known for budget-based tiered rates that assign each household an allocation from its lot size and occupancy and charge sharply above it. Look up your address's allocation rather than assuming a flat rate.

Irvine is the centre of gravity for Orange County's hardware economy, and Broadcom's headquarters here makes it one of the more significant semiconductor addresses in the United States. Panasonic Avionics — the in-flight entertainment business — is also headquartered in the city. These are engineering-heavy employers that recruit internationally and are experienced with employment-based petitions.

Orange County is one of the largest medical device clusters in the world and Irvine is its middle. Edwards Lifesciences, the heart-valve company, and Masimo, in patient monitoring, are both headquartered here and both are large employers. Regulatory affairs, quality, clinical and manufacturing engineering roles are steady, and the sector is far less cyclical than the tech side of town.

An unusual concentration: two major Asian carmakers put their US headquarters in Irvine, and the electric-vehicle wave added more. These are sales, marketing, product planning, engineering and design operations rather than plants, which makes them white-collar employers with genuine international mobility.
University & research
University of California, Irvine — including UCI Health and the medical school, Irvine Valley College, Concordia University Irvine
UCI is a major research university and one of the city's largest employers, with a medical centre in nearby Orange and a growing health campus in Irvine itself. It anchors the biotech and device pipeline, brings a very large international student and postdoctoral population, and is the reason the city feels younger than its master-planned architecture suggests.
Games, software & digital
Blizzard Entertainment (headquartered here), Alteryx, Amazon's Irvine offices, Google's Irvine office, a deep games and esports layer around UCI
Irvine has been a games town since the 1990s — Blizzard is headquartered here and a long list of studios and publishers grew up around it, with UCI running one of the earliest collegiate esports programmes in the United States. It is a real cluster with real hiring, and it is the part of the local economy most likely to be remote-friendly.

Ingram Micro (headquartered here), Taco Bell's corporate headquarters, a large accounting, legal and immigration bar, First American Financial nearby
Ingram Micro, one of the world's largest technology distributors, is headquartered in Irvine, and Taco Bell's corporate head office is here too. Around them sits a substantial professional services layer including one of Southern California's larger business-immigration bars — genuinely useful if your move runs through an employment-based petition.
Where to go in Irvine
Orange County Great Park
Nature · The former MCAS El Toro, central-east Irvine
A very large park being built on a decommissioned Marine Corps air station — sports complex, ice rink, Wild Rivers water park, a preserved runway, and a tethered orange helium balloon that lifts you 120 metres over the county.
Local tip: The balloon ride is free and books out; go on a clear weekday morning when you can see Catalina. The preserved hangars and runway edges are the most interesting part and almost nobody walks them.
The Irvine Spectrum Center
Neighborhood · South Irvine, where the 5 and the 405 meet
An open-air shopping, dining and cinema complex built around a Ferris wheel and a carousel, and the closest thing Irvine has to a town square.
Local tip: It is genuinely pleasant on a warm evening and genuinely rammed at weekends. Park in the north structure and walk in. The best food is not in the main ring — it is in the surrounding plazas along Barranca and Alton.
Diamond Jamboree and the Culver corridor
Hidden gemFood · Central Irvine, near Alton and Jamboree
A single plaza carrying one of the densest concentrations of Taiwanese, Korean, Japanese, Chinese and Vietnamese restaurants, bakeries and boba shops in the United States, with an H Mart and a 99 Ranch nearby.
Local tip: Go hungry and go early — the queues at the best places start before six. This is the real food geography of Irvine, and it is a far better introduction to the city than the Spectrum.
Bommer Canyon and the Irvine Open Space Preserve
Nature · Southern Irvine, behind Turtle Rock and Shady Canyon
Thousands of acres of protected coastal sage scrub, oak canyon and grassland dedicated as permanent open space when the city was planned — hiking and mountain-bike trails straight out of the back of the villages.
Local tip: Bommer Canyon's cattle camp area needs no permit on the open trails but some routes are docent-only, so check the city's schedule first. Go early: there is no shade and the canyon holds heat. Autumn red flag days close it entirely.
The University of California, Irvine campus
Culture · Central-west Irvine, around Aldrich Park
A radial 1960s campus built around Aldrich Park, a 20-hectare circular garden at its centre, with a serious modernist and brutalist architectural collection radiating out from it.
Local tip: Aldrich Park is open to the public, free, and the best green space in central Irvine — a full loop takes twenty minutes and almost no non-students use it. The Anteater Recreation Center's climbing wall and the Claire Trevor arts events are also open to the city.
Woodbridge and its two lakes
Neighborhood · Central Irvine, around Barranca and Culver
The 1970s village that defined the Irvine template — two artificial lakes with beach clubs, a covered bridge, a network of paths and greenbelts that let children reach school without crossing a road.
Local tip: The lakes are private to Woodbridge residents, which is the point and worth knowing before you rent nearby expecting access. The public greenbelt paths, though, run the length of the village and are the pleasantest walk in central Irvine.
