Employment visa, e-FRRO, and Jaipur's new full registration office

India offers no nomad or freelance route — salaried work requires an employer-sponsored employment visa with a minimum annual salary, obtained from your country of residence before travel. The fourteen-day registration clock then runs from the arrival stamp, and PAN, banking, a SIM and a tenancy all queue behind that registration.

Total cost
Visa fees are set by the Indian mission where you apply and vary by nationality. e-FRRO registration is free, with escalating penalties for late filing. PAN on Form 49AA carries a small government fee, higher for dispatch abroad.
Time needed
Visa four to eight weeks before travel. Registration filed inside fourteen days and typically decided online within days. e-FRRO advises filing about two weeks ahead of any deadline.
Validity
Employment visas are usually granted a year at a time and extended in India through the FRRO, commonly to a five-year total. Registration follows both the visa and the address; update it when either changes.

Medium confidence·Foreign nationals moving to Jaipur for work. Immigration is national, run by the Ministry of Home Affairs through the Bureau of Immigration. Registration falls to the office with jurisdiction over your address, which since late 2025 is a full FRRO in Jaipur rather than a district police function.

Before you start

  • A signed appointment letter from an entity registered and operating in India
  • Gross annual salary meeting the employment visa threshold, which the Bureau of Immigration sets at more than ₹16.25 lakh for most applicants and at ₹3.60 lakh for people of Indian origin and the spouse or children of an Indian citizen, PIO or OCI cardholder
  • A passport valid well beyond the intended stay
  • A Jaipur address you can evidence within fourteen days of landing

Step-by-step

  1. 1

Confirm the employment visa is the right category

Business visas do not permit taking up employment and tourist visas permit nothing. If you have Indian ancestry or an Indian spouse, look at the OCI card first — it removes the visa cycle and FRRO registration entirely.

  2. 2

Apply from your country of residence

Use the Indian Visa Online portal and submit through the mission or its outsourced centre where you live. The employer supplies the appointment letter, company proof and salary commitment. An initial one-year grant, extendable in India, is typical.

  3. 3

    Note the arrival stamp date

Fourteen days runs from the immigration stamp, not from when you settle. This is the single most common failure among new arrivals in India and it is entirely avoidable.

    File the registration on e-FRRO

Register at indianfrro.gov.in against the office covering Rajasthan. Upload passport, visa, photograph, employment letter and proof of your Jaipur address. It is normally decided online, with an office visit only if you are specifically called.

  5. 5

Start the PAN application on Form 49AA at the same time

Do not sequence PAN after registration — run them in parallel. Foreign nationals cannot use the Aadhaar-based instant e-PAN, so Form 49AA through Protean or UTIITSL is the route.

Check the permit position before travelling to the north-east or Sikkim

Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit for parts of Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram, Manipur and Sikkim. It is unrelated to your visa and is applied for separately. Plan it well ahead of a trip rather than at the state boundary.

Things most newcomers don’t know

Jaipur only became a full FRRO on 27 November 2025, and older guidance still says otherwise.

Rajasthan used to fall inside FRRO Delhi's jurisdiction, with registration performed at district level by the Superintendent of Police acting as a Foreigners Registration Officer — an additional duty rather than a specialism, and anything non-routine meant Delhi. A gazette notification on 27 November 2025, under the new Immigration and Foreigners Act 2025, created a full Foreigners Regional Registration Office in Jaipur covering the whole state; Chandigarh and Guwahati were created in the same round. India now has fifteen FRROs. A great deal of relocation advice online predates the change and will send you to Delhi.

The fourteen-day clock is running before you can plausibly have a lease.

Registration requires an address proof, and finding, agreeing and stamping a Jaipur flat inside two weeks while also starting a job is difficult. The workable answer is to register against an employer guest-house or serviced-apartment letter, then file an address change on e-FRRO once you move. Ask your employer for that letter before you fly.

The salary threshold drops sharply for people of Indian origin and Indian families.

The employment visa's standard floor is a gross salary above ₹16.25 lakh a year, but people of Indian origin and the spouse or children of an Indian citizen, PIO or OCI cardholder need only ₹3.60 lakh. In a city where salaries sit well below Bengaluru or Mumbai levels, that difference decides whether a role is viable at all — and a great many applicants never check whether they qualify.

Rajasthan borders Pakistan, and some districts need separate permission.

Parts of Rajasthan close to the international border sit under restricted-area rules, and foreign nationals travelling to certain border districts — notably around Jaisalmer and Barmer — may need specific permission. This is separate from your visa and separate from FRRO registration, and it is the kind of thing discovered at a checkpost in the desert rather than in advance. Ask the FRRO before planning a border-district trip.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Following old guidance to a district police office rather than the Jaipur FRRO.
  • Counting fourteen days from when you found a flat rather than from the arrival stamp.
  • Entering on a business visa intending to take employment.
  • Delaying PAN and taking penal withholding on your first pay packets.
  • Booking travel to the north-east or a Rajasthan border district without checking the permit position.
