Things to do in Kayseri

Nature · Tekir, ~30 minutes south of the city

A 3,864 m stratovolcano above the plateau, with 41 runs and 112 km of piste served by 19 lift systems on its northern flanks, and walking country on it the rest of the year.

Local tip: Go up on a weekday evening under lights rather than at the weekend, when half the city is there. Out of season, the road to Tekir and the crater rim walks are worth the drive for the view back over the plain.

Landmark · Melikgazi (city centre)

A black basalt fortress of Roman origin rebuilt by the Seljuks, sitting squarely in the middle of the modern city, with the covered bazaar and the old bedesten spilling around it.

Local tip: Walk the bazaar rather than the castle walls: the covered market behind it is a working one, and the carpet, copper and cured-meat trades are all still there rather than staged for anyone.

Culture · Melikgazi (city centre)

A Seljuk hospital and attached medical school completed in 1206, built as a pair of courtyards so that teaching and treatment sat side by side — one of the earliest institutions anywhere to combine the two.

Local tip: It is now a medical-history museum and takes forty minutes. Go for the architecture of the two linked courtyards, which is the point: the layout is the argument the building was making about how medicine should be taught.

Landmark · Kocasinan, ~20 km north-east

A Bronze Age mound and the Assyrian merchants' quarter beside it, where tens of thousands of cuneiform tablets — letters, contracts, debts, family arguments — were found in the ruins of traders' houses.

Local tip: Read a little before you go, because what is above ground is mudbrick foundations and the story is what makes it extraordinary. The tablets themselves are largely in Ankara and in the Kayseri museum.

Food · Around the covered bazaar, Melikgazi

The cured-meat shops behind the castle, with whole pastırma hanging in fenugreek crusts and sucuk in coils, sliced to order and vacuum-packed while you wait.

Local tip: Ask for 'sırt' — the loin cut — sliced thin, and buy sucuk from the same shop. Everyone in Türkiye who passes through Kayseri leaves with a bag of this, and it is genuinely a different product from the supermarket version.

Neighborhood · Talas, on the slope south-east of the centre

The old quarter climbing the hillside toward Erciyes — cut-stone houses from the Greek and Armenian communities that lived here until the 1920s, narrow lanes, and the city laid out below.

Local tip: Walk up through the old stone streets in the late afternoon and stop at one of the restored houses that are now cafés. It is fifteen minutes from the centre and it is where Kayseri's summer evenings happen.
