The Kharkiv IT Cluster and its member companies, spanning outsourcing, product engineering and R&D
The sector that kept Kharkiv an economy. The cluster was founded in 2015, is one of the largest industry bodies in the country, and reports that its community has roughly doubled since February 2022 despite the city's position. Much of the work is delivered from distributed teams, so a Kharkiv IT job does not necessarily mean sitting in Kharkiv.
Defence, machine-building & drones
The Malyshev Plant, the Morozov Design Bureau, Ukrainian Energy Machines, and a dense layer of small drone and electronic-warfare manufacturers
Kharkiv was the Soviet Union's tank and turbine city and the industrial DNA survived. The new layer is small-series drone and EW production. Export controls and security vetting make hiring foreigners here genuinely complicated — assume you cannot walk into this sector.
Science & higher education
V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University (founded 1804), Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute, the Kharkiv Aviation Institute, the Kharkiv Institute of Physics and Technology
One of the densest concentrations of technical higher education in eastern Europe, and the reason the IT cluster has a talent pipeline at all. Teaching runs in hybrid and underground formats; the institutions are functioning, not paused.
Publishing & printing
Vivat, Folio, Ranok and the printing houses around them
Kharkiv is Ukraine's publishing and printing centre by volume — a genuinely large employer for editors, translators, designers and press staff, and one of the few creative industries here that is national in scale rather than local.
Reconstruction & underground construction
Municipal construction programmes, shelter and underground-school contractors, engineering and survey firms
Kharkiv is running one of the largest municipal underground-construction programmes in Europe: purpose-built subterranean schools, shelter conversion and metro-station adaptation. It is unglamorous, well funded and hiring engineers, project managers and quantity surveyors.
Trade & logistics
The Barabashovo market complex, wholesalers, hauliers and warehousing along the eastern corridors
Kharkiv was the trading hub of eastern Ukraine and Barabashovo one of the largest markets in Europe. Both are much reduced — the market was heavily damaged in 2022 and the eastern routes are gone — but the sector still functions and is the city's largest informal employer.
