The statutory deadline for a temporary residence decision is 60 days from a complete file. In Kraków, work-based karta pobytu cases routinely run eight to fourteen months, a figure the voivodeship office does not publish because the number on its website is the legal maximum rather than the current average. Applications across Poland have roughly tripled since 2020 and Małopolskie sits alongside Mazowieckie at the back of the queue. Nothing about your paperwork changes this; only filing early does.

When your application is accepted you get a stamp in your passport confirming a lodged case. That makes your presence in Poland lawful for as long as the case runs, even after your visa expires — but it is not a travel document. If you leave the Schengen area on the stamp alone and your visa has expired, you may not be able to get back in. People book flights home in month nine of the wait and discover this at the airport.

Kraków banned burning coal and wood inside the city limits from 1 September 2019 — the first Polish city to do so — so a legally heated flat here runs on district heating from MPEC, gas or electricity. Ask which. A tenement advertised with a charming tiled stove is either connected to something else or a problem. Separately, ask about the czynsz: district heating is billed through the building's administration charge and swings hard between summer and January.

After a court struck down the first attempt in 2024, Kraków's Strefa Czystego Transportu came into force at the start of 2026 across roughly 60% of the city's area, including the whole centre. It is camera-enforced with a PLN 500 fine. Vehicles registered outside Kraków that do not meet the emission standard can still enter on a paid basis during a transitional period running to the end of 2028; after that they cannot. Buying a cheap old diesel for a move to Kraków is now an expensive mistake.

Around 150,000 students arrive for the academic year and the rental market tightens sharply from late August. In the old town and Kazimierz you are also competing with short-term letting, which pays a landlord more for three summer months than a year-long tenant does. The stock that reaches a twelve-month lease in the centre is thin and it moves in days. Mid-summer, or January, are the times the market is on your side.

Poland exempts employment and mandate-contract income from income tax for workers under 26, up to PLN 85,528 a year. It does not apply to income from registered business activity. In a city with a hundred and fifty thousand students and an IT sector that defaults to B2B, this catches young hires constantly: they take the higher headline day rate on a B2B contract and hand back a relief that was worth more than the difference.
