Status, Social Security number and the Clark County work card
There is no post-arrival registration in the US: your I-94 record is your status. In the first weeks you need a Social Security number if work-authorised, or an ITIN if not. What is different about Las Vegas is the work card — an occupational clearance issued by Las Vegas Metropolitan Police for hospitality, alcohol-service, security and gaming-adjacent work. Employers treat it as a precondition of the start date, and the processing time is outside your control, so it belongs at the top of your list rather than the bottom.

You have 30 days from establishing residency to get a Nevada licence. If your current licence is from another US state it transfers without a road test. If it is foreign, Nevada operates no exchange arrangements at all, so plan on the written knowledge test and, in most cases, the skills test — which means a registered, insured vehicle you can bring to the appointment. Registration adds a Nevada wrinkle: an annual emissions test in Clark County and a Governmental Services Tax scaled to what the car is worth.

Coverage comes from an employer, from Nevada Health Link, or from Nevada Medicaid if your income qualifies. Nevada expanded Medicaid, so there is no coverage gap below the subsidy floor. The distinctly local problem is supply rather than eligibility: Nevada sits near the bottom of the national tables for physicians and especially specialists per head, so having insurance and having an appointment are different achievements. Establish with a primary care physician before you need one — the wait for a first appointment as a new patient is the part that catches people out.

The US has no SIM registration requirement, so getting connected is trivially easy: buy a prepaid SIM or eSIM and it works immediately. The friction is postpaid contracts, which run a credit check you cannot pass on arrival. Locally, two things matter: during the largest conventions the networks around the Strip and the convention centre visibly degrade, and once you leave the valley for the desert the coverage gaps are large enough to be a safety issue rather than an annoyance.

Nevada is one of the few American states where the state tax section of your arrival checklist is genuinely empty: no personal income tax, no state return, no state withholding certificate. The revenue arrives instead through sales tax — Clark County's combined rate is among the higher ones in the West — and through property tax, which is unusually well protected by a statutory cap on how fast an owner-occupier's bill can rise. The one thing that does need care is tip income, which is fully taxable, employer-reported, and the basis on which you will later be underwritten for a loan.

What to know before you go
Sort your work card before you need it, not after you are hired
CriticalClark County requires a police-issued work card for a long list of jobs — alcohol service, security, gaming-adjacent roles — and gaming positions additionally require registration with the Nevada Gaming Control Board. Employers routinely make a start date conditional on it, and the background check takes time. Start the application the week you accept the offer, not the week you start. This is the single most local piece of American bureaucracy in this app and almost no relocation guide mentions it.
Thirty days to convert your licence, and Nevada tests foreign drivers
CriticalNew residents must obtain a Nevada licence within 30 days. A licence from another US state converts without a road test. A foreign licence does not: Nevada operates no exchange arrangements, so expect the written knowledge test and, in most cases, the skills test as well. Clark County DMV offices are the busiest in the state — book the appointment online in your first week and treat the 30 days as a booking deadline.
No income tax at all — then budget for the July power bill
CriticalNevada's constitution prohibits a personal income tax, so there is no state return to file and no state withholding on your payslip. The offset is that summer runs above 40°C for four months and air conditioning is not optional: an ordinary one-bed can pull USD 180–320 a month from NV Energy in July and August. Ask any prospective landlord what the previous tenant's July bill actually was, not what the average is.
The Strip is not in the City of Las Vegas, and that changes who you call
ImportantLas Vegas Boulevard South runs through the unincorporated townships of Paradise and Winchester, governed by Clark County. Henderson and North Las Vegas are separate cities again. Which authority handles your business licence, building permit, parking ticket or noise complaint depends on which side of an invisible line your address falls, and the four jurisdictions have different rules and different fee schedules.
Apply for your Social Security number about ten days after arriving
CriticalThe Social Security Administration verifies your status against DHS records that lag entry by one to two weeks, so going in on day two usually wastes the trip. Only work-authorised people qualify; everyone else files IRS Form W-7 for an ITIN instead. The card is free, and no US employer, bank or landlord can charge you for it.
Water rules here are enforced, not aspirational
ImportantThe Southern Nevada Water Authority sets mandatory watering days by season and issues fines for watering on the wrong day, and Nevada law requires nonfunctional turf removed across the valley. Roughly 90% of the valley's water comes from the Colorado River via Lake Mead. If you rent a house with a garden or buy into an HOA, the landscaping rules and rebate schemes are a real part of the cost — check before you plant anything.

MGM, Caesars, Wynn and Sands are all headquartered in the metro. Leisure and hospitality is a far larger share of employment here than in any other big US metro, which is why a downturn in travel is a local recession.

CES takes over the city each January and the trade-show calendar underpins mid-week hotel demand. The Sphere opened in 2023 and the Formula 1 street circuit has run each November since.

Cheap land, no state income tax, no earthquake risk and abundant solar have built a serious colocation cluster — Switch's Las Vegas campuses are among the largest in the world. The jobs are fewer than the square footage suggests.

Allegiant is headquartered in Summerlin, and Harry Reid is one of the busiest airports in the US — which makes the valley an unusually good distribution point for the Southwest despite having no port and one railway.

The city went from no major league franchise to four inside a decade, with the Athletics' ballpark on the old Tropicana site due later this decade. The knock-on construction and hospitality demand is a real part of the local economy.
Where to go in Las Vegas
Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area
Nature · 20 minutes west of Summerlin
Red Aztec sandstone escarpments and a 13-mile one-way scenic loop, close enough that people go before work.
Local tip: Timed-entry reservations apply through the cooler months and sell out — book ahead. In summer the only sane window is the first hour after opening; the rock radiates heat all afternoon.
Spring Mountain Road
Food · Chinatown, west of the Strip
Three miles of Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese, Thai and Taiwanese restaurants in strip malls — the valley's real dining scene.
Local tip: Much of it runs late or all night for the graveyard shift, which is why locals eat here and not on the Strip. Park at the plaza you are eating in; the mall lots are policed.
The Neon Museum
Culture · North Las Vegas Boulevard
A boneyard of retired hotel signs — the Stardust, the Moulin Rouge, the Silver Slipper — arranged in an outdoor lot behind the salvaged La Concha lobby.
Local tip: Book the after-dark slot. The restored signs only light up at night, and the daytime tour is the same objects in flat desert glare.
The Arts District
Neighborhood · 18b, south of downtown
A warehouse grid south of Fremont turned galleries, breweries, vintage shops and antique malls — the part of Las Vegas that has nothing to do with tourism.
Local tip: First Friday each month closes the streets for an open-studio night. Otherwise go on a weekday afternoon; several galleries keep gallery hours, not bar hours.
Hoover Dam & Boulder City
Landmark · 45 minutes south-east
The 1936 dam across Black Canyon, with Lake Mead's bathtub ring behind it recording two decades of Colorado River shortage.
Local tip: Boulder City, built to house the dam workers, is the only municipality in Nevada where gambling is illegal — a genuinely strange 25-minute drive from the Strip. The lakeside cafes there are the reason to stay past the dam tour.
Mount Charleston
Hidden gemNature · 45 minutes north-west, Spring Mountains
Bristlecone pine, alpine trails and a small ski area on an 3,600-metre massif that most visitors never learn exists.
Local tip: It runs roughly 12–15°C cooler than the valley floor, which makes it the local escape in August rather than a winter destination. Take chains in winter — the highway is a mountain road and closes.
