Leicester introduced selective licensing in October 2022 covering parts of five areas — Braunstone Park and Rowley Fields, Fosse, Westcotes, Stoneygate and Saffron — with the designation due for review in October 2027. Inside those boundaries a landlord needs a licence to let almost any private rented home, and the licence costs £1,290 (£1,032 on application, £258 on issue), which tells you how seriously it is meant. The boundaries are partial rather than whole-ward, so the check is address-by-address on the council's map, not by neighbourhood name. Separately, larger shared houses need an HMO licence anywhere in the city. Two minutes on the council's checker before you hand over any money is the highest-value thing a renter can do here, and an evasive answer from an agent tells you a great deal about how the property is run.

The 2026/27 charge is £2,528.75 at Band D, £1,685.83 at Band A and £1,966.81 at Band B — among the higher Council Tax bills of any English city, and a much bigger share of the total housing cost here than it would be in London because the rents are so much lower. At the same time, Leicester City Council covers only about 370,000 people while the urban area is far larger: Oadby and Wigston is its own borough, Braunstone Town and Glenfield are in Blaby, Birstall and Thurmaston are in Charnwood. All of them are 'Leicester' in every practical sense and none of them is Leicester for billing, school admissions or licensing. Always check which authority an address is actually in before you compare two rents.

The Renters' Rights Act converted every assured shorthold tenancy in England into a periodic assured tenancy from 1 May 2026. There is no fixed term to expire: you can give two months' notice at any point, and a landlord can only end the tenancy on a specified statutory ground. Rental bidding is unlawful — a landlord must advertise a price and cannot invite or accept more than it — and no more than one month's rent may be demanded in advance. Almost every guide, forum thread and letting agent's script written before 2026 is wrong about this.

UKVI stopped issuing visa vignette stickers to successful new applicants on 1 July 2026, and biometric residence permits ended before that. Your permission exists as an eVisa in a UKVI account, and you prove it by generating a share code for a specific purpose, which an employer or landlord enters online. Set the account up and check every detail before you fly — there is no physical document to fall back on if the record is wrong.

You can only apply from inside the UK, so it cannot be arranged in advance. Payroll needs it to tax you correctly; without it you can work legally but will usually be put on an emergency tax code and have to reclaim. Check first whether you already have one printed in the remarks on an old BRP card.

At the 2021 census no single ethnic group formed a majority of Leicester's population, and the city has the largest Hindu population share of any local authority in England and Wales. In everyday terms that means the food is genuinely excellent and genuinely cheap, a huge share of the city is vegetarian-friendly by default, and the working calendar quietly bends around Diwali and Eid as well as Christmas. It also means an unusually high chance that someone at work speaks your first language. If you are arriving from South Asia, East Africa or Eastern Europe, Leicester will feel less like a place you have to explain yourself in than almost any other city of its size in Britain.
