Confirm your employer's registration status
The whole route depends on the company being registered with the Business Facilitation Unit — broadly, majority non-Cypriot ownership or documented foreign investment of at least €200,000. If it is not registered, you are on the slower ordinary employment route with a labour market test.

Apply to the Civil Registry and Migration Department
Applications are lodged with supporting documents, biometrics and the criminal record and medical certificates. Key-personnel files are commonly decided in four to six weeks.

Collect the Alien Registration Certificate (ARC)
The ARC number is your identifier for banking, GESY, tax and every other system. Nothing downstream works before it exists.

Things most newcomers don’t know

A Cypriot residence permit is not a Schengen permit — Cyprus is outside the area.

Cyprus is an EU member state that has not joined Schengen. Your residence card does not give visa-free movement into Greece, Germany or anywhere else in the zone, and your nationality's ordinary Schengen requirements still apply. People plan weekend travel, and occasionally whole relocations, on the opposite assumption.

The €2,500 threshold, not the job title, is what unlocks the fast route.

Classification as a highly skilled employee of a company of foreign interests requires a minimum gross salary of €2,500 a month plus a degree or two years' experience plus a two-year contract. Clear all three and the labour market test disappears and the permit runs three years. Miss the salary by fifty euros and you are on a slower, more restrictive route.

Family members of highly skilled staff get labour market access immediately.

Spouses of highly skilled employees can obtain permits with immediate access to employment in Cyprus, which is unusual — most European skilled routes make the spouse wait or apply separately. For a dual-career couple this can be the deciding factor between Cyprus and a nominally more attractive destination.

The Digital Nomad Visa's quota has moved three times in four years, and it leads nowhere.

It opened at 100 permits in 2021, rose to 500 in 2022, and the Deputy Ministry announced 1,000 in October 2025 while the Migration Department's own page continued to state 500. It is also a visitor-category permit: no path to permanent residence, and family members cannot work. Verify the live ceiling before planning around availability.

Common mistakes to avoid

Assuming a Cypriot residence permit carries Schengen rights. It does not.
Negotiating a salary just under the €2,500 highly-skilled threshold.
Not checking whether your employer is actually registered with the Business Facilitation Unit.
Choosing the Digital Nomad Visa when you intend to settle — it accrues nothing.
Delaying GESY registration while contributions are already being deducted from your pay.
