Status, a Social Security number and an Arkansas licence in 30 days
There is no post-arrival registration in the United States: your I-94 record is your status. In the first weeks you need a Social Security number if you are work-authorised, or an ITIN if not, and an Arkansas driver's licence within 30 days of becoming a resident. Arkansas issues both a REAL ID-compliant credential and a non-compliant one, and since 7 May 2025 only the compliant version works at an airport checkpoint. Licences are issued at state revenue offices, which are also where you register a vehicle — but not before the county assessor has seen it.

Arkansas requires no periodic safety inspection and no vehicle emissions test in any county, so the registration path is documents and money with no trip to a garage. What replaces it is the assessment: privately owned vehicles are individual personal property, reported to the county assessor between 1 January and 31 May each year with a 10% penalty for lateness, and the revenue office will not issue a tag without both the current-year assessment listing the vehicle and proof that the personal property taxes are paid. A new resident has 30 days; a car bought in Arkansas has 60 days from the purchase date, with a $3.00 penalty for every 10 days beyond it.

What to know before you go
Assess your vehicles with the county between 1 January and 31 May, every year

Then you pay the tax, and you cannot get or renew a tag without producing both the current-year assessment listing that vehicle and proof the personal property taxes are paid. Newcomers from states with a flat registration fee do not know this exists until the revenue office turns them away.
Two different clocks, and everyone confuses them
CriticalA new Arkansas resident has 30 days from becoming a resident to obtain an Arkansas driver's licence and to register a vehicle brought in. Separately, a vehicle bought in Arkansas must be registered within 60 days of the purchase date, with a $3.00 penalty for each 10 days after that. People read the 60-day figure on the DMV FAQ, assume it applies to their move, and are wrong by a month.

That is a real cut, and it is also frequently over-reported: the city and county rates still apply to groceries. In Little Rock that means 2.125% on food rather than nothing. Cross the river to North Little Rock and it is 3.000%.
There is no safety inspection and no emissions test anywhere in Arkansas
Good to knowNothing in the Arkansas registration path requires you to take the vehicle to a garage. That is a genuine simplification against New York, which inspects every car annually for both safety and emissions, and against Texas or Virginia, which test in named areas. Do not budget time or money for a test that does not exist here — budget instead for the annual personal property tax that does.
Learn where you shelter before storm season, not during it
CriticalCentral Arkansas sits in a genuine severe weather corridor, with the main season running roughly March to May and a second smaller peak in autumn. A tornado moved through west Little Rock on 31 March 2023 and did serious damage in a well-established part of the city. Work out on day one where in your building you go — an interior room on the lowest floor, no windows — and whether the property has a safe room. University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), Arkansas Children's Hospital, Baptist Health, CHI St. Vincent, Arkansas Blue Cross and Blue Shield
UAMS is the state's only academic medical centre and among its largest employers in a single institution, with a research and clinical footprint that reaches every county. Arkansas Children's is the only paediatric hospital in the state, which makes Little Rock the place families with a sick child end up regardless of where they live.

Little Rock is the seat of everything the state does, and the agencies and the law and lobbying sector around them are the reason the local labour market is steadier than the metro's size would predict. It also means a great deal of downtown office space is public sector.

For a metro of this size the financial sector is disproportionate: two substantial banks headquartered here plus Stephens, one of the largest privately held investment banks off Wall Street, which has been in Little Rock since 1933.

Dillard's, Windstream, Acxiom, FIS
Dillard's is a national department store chain run from downtown Little Rock, and Acxiom effectively invented consumer data brokerage here in the 1960s. Note that Walmart, Tyson and J.B. Hunt are in the north-west corner of the state, three hours away — a distinction almost every outsider gets wrong about Arkansas.

Dassault Falcon Jet, Little Rock Air Force Base (Jacksonville), Lockheed Martin, Safran
Dassault's Little Rock site is the completion centre where Falcon business jets are finished — interiors, paint, delivery — and it is the largest of its kind the company runs. Little Rock Air Force Base, twenty minutes north, is the training hub for C-130 crews across the entire US Air Force.

Port of Little Rock, Union Pacific, the Arkansas River navigation system, I-30 / I-40 freight corridors
Little Rock sits where I-30 and I-40 cross, which is one of the busiest freight intersections in the country, and the Port of Little Rock is a slack-water harbour on the McClellan-Kerr navigation system. The port has drawn a run of manufacturing investment on the back of it.

Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site
Culture · Park Street, midtown
The school where nine Black students were escorted past a mob by the 101st Airborne in 1957, still an operating high school, with a National Park Service visitor centre across the road.
Local tip: The visitor centre is free and the ranger talks are the reason to go — this is one of very few National Historic Sites that is also a working school, and the rangers are explicit about what has and has not changed since.
Clinton Presidential Center & Park
Landmark · East end of the River Market district
The presidential library cantilevered over the Arkansas River, in a 30-acre park with the restored Rock Island railway bridge running out from it as a pedestrian crossing.
Local tip: Skip the paid museum if you are short of time and just walk the park and the Clinton Bridge at sunset. The full-scale Oval Office replica upstairs is the exhibit people actually remember.
Pinnacle Mountain State Park
Nature · 20 minutes west of downtown
A 1,000-foot cone-shaped peak marking the first of the Ouachita Mountains, with a short brutal scramble to a 360-degree view over the river valley.
Local tip: Take the West Summit trail up and the East Summit down — the east side is a boulder scramble that is much harder in the wet. Go early in summer; there is no shade at the top and central Arkansas humidity is not a joke.
The Arkansas River Trail & the Big Dam Bridge
Nature · Both banks of the Arkansas River
A paved loop of some 15 miles linking Little Rock and North Little Rock across two dedicated pedestrian bridges, part of a longer 88-mile regional system.
Local tip: Start at the Big Dam Bridge, which at over half a mile is among the longest bridges in North America built purely for walking and cycling, and ride the loop anticlockwise so you finish in Argenta with somewhere to eat.
SoMa — South Main Street
Food · Main Street, south of I-630
A few blocks of independent restaurants, a bakery, a bookshop and a farmers' market in what was a largely vacant corridor twenty years ago.
Local tip: The Bernice Garden farmers' market on Sunday mornings is the local institution here. This is the best walking-and-eating stretch in the city and it is entirely off the visitor track.
Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts, MacArthur Park
Hidden gemCulture · MacArthur Park, east of downtown
Reopened in 2023 after a full rebuild, in a park containing the 1840 arsenal building where Douglas MacArthur was born.
Local tip: Free general admission, which is unusual for a museum of this quality, and the pleated roof and the restored 1937 art deco facade are worth the visit on their own. The park around it is the oldest in the city.
