The Renters' Rights Act converted every assured shorthold tenancy in England into a periodic assured tenancy from 1 May 2026. There is no fixed term to expire: you can give two months' notice at any point, and a landlord can only end the tenancy on a specified statutory ground. Rental bidding is unlawful — a landlord must advertise a price and cannot invite or accept more than it — and no more than one month's rent may be demanded in advance. This is the largest change to English renting in a generation, and almost every guide, forum post and letting agent's script written before 2026 is wrong about it.

UKVI stopped issuing visa vignette stickers to successful new applicants on 1 July 2026, and biometric residence permits ended before that. Your permission to be in the UK exists as an eVisa in a UKVI account, and you prove it by generating a share code for a specific purpose — right to work, right to rent — which the checker enters online. Set the account up and confirm the details before you fly, because there is no physical document to fall back on if the record is wrong.

You can only apply from inside the UK, so there is no way to arrange it in advance. Payroll needs it to tax you correctly; without it you can still work legally but will usually be put on an emergency tax code and have to reclaim later. Check first whether you already have one — several visa categories had the number printed in the remarks on the old BRP card.

The Liverpool City Region is the second area in Britain outside London to franchise its buses, after Greater Manchester. Services transfer to public control under the Metro brand in phases between late 2026 and the end of 2028, which brings routes, fares and timetables under the Combined Authority instead of individual operators. Rail is further ahead: Merseytravel owns the Merseyrail Class 777 fleet outright — genuinely unusual in Britain, where a private rolling-stock company almost always owns the trains — with the first unit in service on 23 January 2023 and battery-powered units running beyond the wires to Headbolt Lane since 5 October 2023. The practical effect is that Merseyrail is frequent, cheap and covers both banks of the river, so living in Waterloo, Birkenhead or West Kirby is a genuine option rather than a compromise.

Liverpool City Council runs selective landlord licensing across designated wards, and there is a public register of licensed properties you can search by address. If the property is in a designated area and the landlord does not hold a licence, that is not a technicality — it is an offence, it usually means the property has never been inspected, and it restricts the landlord's ability to evict. Search the register before you pay a holding deposit. It takes two minutes and it is the single most useful thing a newcomer can do that nobody suggests.

Ninety-seven Liverpool supporters died as a result of the crush at Hillsborough on 15 April 1989. Four days later The Sun ran a front page headlined 'THE TRUTH' that blamed the victims, and the claims were false. The paper has been boycotted across Merseyside ever since — many newsagents will not stock it, Liverpool FC excluded its journalists from Anfield in 2017, and the boycott is honoured by people who were not born when it happened. Buying it, quoting it or treating it as an ordinary newspaper in company will land badly, and the reason is worth knowing rather than just the rule. The same instinct explains why the city is far more political and far more collectively minded than most of England, and why it does not think of itself as simply another northern city.
