Two of the Ohio River crossings between Louisville and southern Indiana are tolled and one — the Sherman Minton — is not. If you are considering living in Jeffersonville, New Albany or Clarksville for the cheaper housing, price the tolls over a year and check which crossing your commute would actually use. It is a real monthly number, and it also has income tax consequences across the state line.

Kentucky taxes your car every year, not just when you buy it.

The 6% usage tax at titling is a familiar shape — most states charge something like it. The annual ad valorem property tax on the vehicle's value, collected at registration renewal by the county clerk, is not: many states have nothing equivalent. It falls on whoever owned the car on 1 January, and it is the recurring cost newcomers most reliably miss.
