Jobs in Louisville

The sectors hiring, the employers to know, and how work really runs here.

Louisvilleruns on a handful of strong industries. If you’re job-hunting or weighing a move, here’s where the opportunities (and the big-name employers) are.

Top industries & employers

Air logistics & package handling

UPS Worldport at Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport, UPS Supply Chain Solutions, Louisville Regional Airport Authority, DHL and freight forwarders around the airport

Worldport is UPS's global air hub and the reason Louisville's airport ranks among the busiest cargo airports in the world. The employment pattern is genuinely distinctive: the overnight sort runs through the small hours, thousands of part-time roles start around eleven at night, and the Metropolitan College partnership between UPS, the Commonwealth, Louisville Metro, the University of Louisville and Jefferson Community and Technical College pays tuition for people working it.

Healthcare & health insurance

Humana headquarters, Norton Healthcare, UofL Health, Baptist Health, Kindred, Trilogy Health Services, Signature HealthCARE

Humana is one of the largest health insurers in the country and is headquartered downtown, which gives Louisville a genuine corporate head office and a large professional workforce in health administration, actuarial and technology roles. The city also has an unusual concentration of post-acute and long-term care companies.

Bourbon & distilling

Brown-Forman, Heaven Hill, Michter's, Angel's Envy, Old Forester, Rabbit Hole, Bulleit's Shelbyville operations

Brown-Forman is headquartered here and Whiskey Row downtown has been rebuilt as working distilleries rather than museums. Beyond the visitor economy this is real manufacturing — cooperage, bottling, warehousing and export — and it is one of the few sectors where Kentucky's brand is the global one.

Advanced manufacturing & automotive

Ford Louisville Assembly Plant, Ford Kentucky Truck Plant, GE Appliances at Appliance Park, BlueOval SK battery operations in Hardin County

Ford runs two large assembly plants inside the city and GE Appliances' Appliance Park is a campus with its own postcode. Manufacturing employment here is unionised, cyclical and still central to the local economy in a way it no longer is in most comparable metros.

Food service & restaurant corporates

Yum! Brands headquarters, Papa John's, Texas Roadhouse in nearby Louisville, Churchill Downs Incorporated

Yum! — KFC, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut — is headquartered here, and the cluster of restaurant corporate functions makes Louisville an unexpectedly strong place for franchise operations, supply chain and brand marketing careers.

Higher education & research

University of Louisville, Jefferson Community and Technical College, Bellarmine University, Spalding University, UofL Health Sciences Center

The University of Louisville's medical campus sits downtown next to the hospitals, which is why clinical research and the health systems recruit from the same pool. Metropolitan College ties the universities directly to the UPS night sort, which is an unusual town-and-gown arrangement.
