Things to do in Luton

Where locals actually go — culture, neighbourhoods, nature and a few hidden gems.

Editor's picks

A local's shortlist — the places worth your time first, each with a tip.

Dunstable Downs & the Chilterns National Landscape

Hidden gem

Nature · The chalk escarpment on the western edge, five miles from the town centre

Open chalk grassland on the Chiltern scarp with a view over three counties, gliders overhead from the London Gliding Club, and the Icknield Way running along the top.

Local tip: This is the thing people who write Luton off have never seen. It is genuinely one of the best free views in southern England, it is fifteen minutes from the town centre, and it is inside a protected national landscape. Whipsnade Zoo and the chalk lion cut into the hillside are just along the ridge. Go on a clear winter afternoon when the gliders are up.

Bury Park

Food · A mile west of the town centre

The commercial heart of South Asian Luton — Kashmiri and Bangladeshi grocers, halal butchers, sweet shops, jewellers and the best kitchens in the town, along Dunstable Road and the streets off it.

Local tip: Eat here rather than in the town centre. Go for the mixed grills and the karahi, buy your spices by the kilo from the grocers rather than in tiny jars, and go hungry on a Friday afternoon when it is busiest. It is also next to Kenilworth Road, so a match day changes the parking entirely.

Wardown Park & the Culture Trust museum

Culture · A mile north of the town centre, on the Lea

A Victorian park along the River Lea with boating, a bandstand and a Victorian mansion holding the town's museum — including the hat collection that explains what Luton actually was.

Local tip: The hat galleries are the reason to go: straw plait, blocking, the trade that employed the whole town and gave the football club its nickname. The park itself is the best green space inside the built-up area and the Lea walk continues north out of the town from here.

The Hat District & Luton town centre

Neighborhood · Around Guildford Street and Bute Street, by the station

The old hat factories behind the station, converted into studios, workspace and a creative quarter, next to the University of Bedfordshire's town-centre campus.

Local tip: This is the visible edge of the town's attempt to build something after manufacturing. The industrial buildings are the real thing — you can read the trade in the architecture, wide windows for light to work by — and the university campus next door means the centre has students in it in a way most towns this size do not.

Stockwood Discovery Centre & Park

Culture · South of the town centre, by junction 10 of the M1

Free museum and walled gardens in a large park on the southern edge, holding the Mossman Collection — the largest collection of horse-drawn vehicles in Britain.

Local tip: Free, quiet, and almost nobody outside Luton has heard of it. The Mossman carriages are genuinely remarkable and the period gardens are better kept than a free attraction has any right to be. It is also the easiest green space to reach from the M1 side of the town.

London Luton Airport and the DART

Landmark · Two miles east of the centre, above the town on the hill

One of London's airports, owned outright by the town's own council, with an automated people mover connecting it to the Midland Main Line at Luton Airport Parkway.

Local tip: The DART opened in March 2023 and turned a shuttle-bus scramble into a four-minute automated run, 24 hours a day. If you fly for work, this is the practical reason to live in Luton rather than anywhere else within an hour of the airport — you can leave the house and be airside faster than most people can reach a London terminal.
