Law No. 27 of 2014 on the lease of properties caps residential rent increases at 5%, prohibits any increase within two consecutive years of the lease start or the last increase, and limits a landlord to five increases across the whole term. Written notice of at least three months before the second year expires is required. It also bars a landlord from asking a residential tenant to vacate within the first three years, and caps the deposit at three months' rent. Every one of those protections depends on the lease being registered — an unregistered lease locks you out of the Rent Disputes Committee, which is the fast route. Register it.

Bahrain's Flexible Work Permit was the Gulf's only genuine self-sponsorship product for ordinary workers — residence without an employer. The LMRA discontinued applications and issuance in October 2022 and gave existing holders a grace period to regularise. It is still described as available across a great deal of migration content, including pages updated this year. There is no like-for-like replacement: the self-held options now are Golden Residency, or a self-sponsorship permit on property or investment, all of which have real financial thresholds.

In Saudi Arabia and Qatar you are asked for a year up front or a book of post-dated cheques. Bahrain runs on monthly rent, usually with one or two months' deposit and a bank transfer or standing order. That single difference means arriving in Bahrain does not require the five-figure lump sum a Riyadh or Doha move does, and it is the most underrated financial advantage of taking a Bahraini offer over a neighbouring one.

Bahrain doubled VAT from 5% to 10% on 1 January 2022 and has kept it there. That is above the UAE's and Oman's 5%, below Saudi Arabia's 15%, and against no VAT at all in Kuwait. It never appears on a payslip, so a package sold as 'tax-free like Dubai' quietly costs more here on everything you buy. Residential rent is outside the scope, which softens it, but groceries, restaurants, fuel and services all carry it.

Thursday evening and Friday bring a large influx of Saudi visitors to Manama's restaurants, hotels and Adliya, and traffic on Bahrain's side of the causeway and along the Manama–Seef corridor is genuinely bad. In the other direction, a real number of Bahrain residents work in the Eastern Province and commute over. If you are planning either, note that Bahrain requires no exit permit to leave — but Saudi residents do need one to come, which is why their Thursday afternoons start early.

Alcohol is legally sold in licensed hotels, restaurants and bars, cinemas show mainstream releases, and Bahrain has long-established churches, a Hindu temple and a historic Jewish community. That does not make it Europe: public drunkenness is an offence, drink-driving is treated severely, Ramadan daytime rules apply in public, and modest dress in government buildings and malls is expected. The difference from Riyadh or Kuwait is real, but it is a licensing difference, not an absence of law.
