Things most newcomers don’t know

Tennessee has no vehicle inspection of any kind, which is genuinely unusual.

The state's emissions programme ended in January 2022 and there is no periodic safety inspection. Compared with the E-Check in Cuyahoga County or the Gateway programme around St. Louis, registering a car here is a single errand. It also means the second-hand market carries no inspection signal at all, so a pre-purchase inspection is on you.

There is no foreign licence exchange, and that is a real cost in time.

Several states maintain reciprocity lists — Florida exchanges for five countries, Colorado for a handful more. Tennessee does not, so every foreign licence holder sits the same tests as a first-time driver. If you are choosing between southern cities and hold a licence from a reciprocity country, that is a genuine practical difference of several weeks.

Ice, not snow, is the winter road hazard here.

Memphis sits far enough south that snowfall is rare but freezing rain is not, and the city has limited treatment capacity for it. An ice event typically brings down limbs onto the MLGW network as well, so the road closure and the power cut usually arrive together. Treat an ice storm warning more seriously than a snow forecast from a northern city would suggest.
