Things most newcomers don’t know

Vision and hearing only — this is the easiest exchange in the country.

A new resident with a valid licence takes no written test and no road test. California requires both from every foreign driver regardless of experience; Massachusetts converts only from Canada, Mexico and US territories and makes everyone else start over. If the DMV process is a factor in choosing between US cities, Florida is the outlier in your favour.

Florida is a no-fault insurance state, and it changes what you are buying.

Florida requires Personal Injury Protection, meaning your own policy covers your injuries regardless of who caused the crash, and limits when you can sue the other driver. Your licence expires when your immigration status does.

Non-immigrant licences in Florida are issued to match the I-94 end date. When USCIS extends your status you must return to a service centre with the approval notice. The systems do not talk to each other and driving on an expired licence is its own offence.

Residency starts when you begin work, not after a waiting period.

Florida deems you a resident when you start employment or engage in a trade or occupation in the state. There is no grace period to establish yourself first — the 30-day clock starts with the job, which is usually well before you have two proofs of address in your own name.

Common mistakes to avoid

Turning up one document short — Florida's accepted-document list is specific and strictly applied.
Leaving the appointment booking until late in the 30-day window.
Buying a car before getting insurance quotes; Florida premiums are among the highest in the US.
Buying minimum PIP coverage without understanding what no-fault does and does not cover.
