Things to do in Milwaukee

Landmark · On Lake Michigan, east of downtown

Calatrava's Quadracci Pavilion, with a 66-metre moving brise soleil that opens at ten, closes at five and flaps once at noon, attached to a serious collection strong in German Expressionism and folk art.

Local tip: Stand outside at noon for the wing flap — it takes about three minutes and it is free from the lakefront path. Then walk the Oak Leaf Trail north along the bluff toward Lake Park, which is the best hour of walking in the city.

Neighborhood · South of downtown along the lake

A former steelworkers' neighbourhood turned the city's most sought-after residential district — Cream City brick duplexes, Kinnickinnic Avenue's restaurants and bars, and a bluff park looking straight back at the skyline.

Local tip: Bay View Bash in September closes KK for the day and is the neighbourhood at its best. The view from South Shore Park across the water to downtown is the photograph of Milwaukee that locals actually take.

Food · Between downtown and the harbour

The old warehouse district south of downtown, rebuilt into galleries, theatres and lofts, with the Milwaukee Public Market as its anchor and the Riverwalk running along the Milwaukee River.

Local tip: The Public Market's upstairs seating is where to eat rather than the ground floor queues. The Riverwalk connects north to downtown and the Beerline, and the Third Ward end has the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design's free student galleries.

Nightlife · Brewers Hill, on the Milwaukee River

A working brewery in an old power plant that runs what is widely held to be the funniest brewery tour in America, and hosts one of the city's best Friday fish fries with a polka band.

Local tip: Book the fish fry rather than just the tour, and go on a Friday. It is loud, communal and involves a polka, and it is the fastest possible introduction to how this city actually socialises.

Nature · South side, near the Menomonee Valley

Three seven-storey conoidal glass domes from the 1960s holding desert, tropical and seasonal show gardens — a piece of mid-century optimism that is both genuinely strange and, in a Wisconsin February, genuinely restorative.

Local tip: Go in January. Walking from minus fifteen into a tropical dome is the point of the place, and the show dome changes its planting several times a year.

Culture · North of downtown along Martin Luther King Drive

The historic centre of Black Milwaukee's business and music life, being deliberately rebuilt as a cultural district around the America's Black Holocaust Museum, which reopened in 2022.

Local tip: The America's Black Holocaust Museum, founded by a lynching survivor, is one of the most affecting small museums in the Midwest and the single best thing a newcomer can do to understand this city's segregation and its history. Allow two hours.
