Unlike Texas, Tennessee's waiver rarely removes the written exam. The test covers Tennessee-specific road rules and the manual is free online. An hour of study saves a second appointment, and appointments are the scarce resource.

Register and title the vehicle — and enjoy how little there is to it
Tennessee ended vehicle emissions testing statewide in 2022 and has never had a safety inspection for private vehicles. Registration is an annual county clerk transaction with a wheel tax on top in Davidson County. Tennessee also does not require a front licence plate, which surprises people who have driven in other states.

Tennessee's minimum liability limits are low relative to what a serious collision costs, and the state has a significant uninsured driver rate. Plan around traffic rather than transit
WeGo runs buses and a single commuter rail line to Lebanon, and the 2024 'Choose How You Move' referendum funds a large expansion of bus rapid transit, sidewalks and signal upgrades — but the delivery runs over years. For now, Nashville is a driving city with a notoriously constrained road network and I-24 at peak is the reason people choose neighbourhoods.

Things most newcomers don’t know

Tennessee's reciprocity waives less than Texas's, and the difference is the written test.

Texas gives holders of a French, German, Korean, Emirati or Taiwanese licence a complete exemption from both exams. Tennessee's agreements typically waive the road skills test only, leaving the vision screening and the written knowledge test in place. People who move from Texas or read a Texas guide assume the same deal and turn up unprepared for a written exam on Tennessee-specific rules.

Tennessee abolished emissions testing statewide in 2022, and there is no safety inspection either.

Davidson County ran emissions testing until January 2022, when the state's plan to end it took effect. Combined with the absence of any private-vehicle safety inspection, Tennessee is one of the least demanding states in the country for keeping a car legal. Newcomers from Texas or North Carolina keep looking for the test appointment; there is not one.

Night-time and rain-wrapped tornadoes make Middle Tennessee's storm risk different in kind.

The Southeast has a far higher share of tornadoes that strike after dark and are hidden inside rain than the classic Plains alley, which is why fatality rates here are disproportionate. The March 2020 storm crossed East Nashville after midnight. Driving in a warning is the worst option — a vehicle is the most dangerous place to be. Know where you would shelter at home and at work before the season.

The transit expansion is funded but the road network is what you live with now.

The 2024 'Choose How You Move' referendum passed with 66% support and added a half-cent to the sales tax to fund bus rapid transit, 86 miles of sidewalk and signal upgrades. It is real and it is already in your sales tax bill. It is also a multi-year build, so neighbourhood choice today should still be made on the drive, not the plan.

Common mistakes to avoid

Assuming Tennessee's reciprocity works like Texas's and skipping preparation for the written test.
Missing the 30-day deadline because appointments were booked out.
Buying the cheapest liability policy in a state with a high uninsured driver rate.
Driving during a tornado warning instead of sheltering.
Looking for an emissions or safety inspection that no longer exists and delaying registration.
