Oil & the Chad–Cameroon pipeline

Chad's oil leaves by a pipeline to Kribi in Cameroon that has run since 2003, and the state has spent the last few years taking control of it — nationalising the ExxonMobil assets Savannah Energy had bought and acquiring Petronas's stake, leaving Chadian entities with majority positions in the Doba field and in both pipeline companies. The wells are in the south; the ministries, SHT and the negotiations are in N'Djamena.
Humanitarian operations & the UN system
UNHCR, WFP, OCHA, UNICEF, ICRC, MSF, IOM and the international NGO consortium
Chad hosts one of the largest refugee populations in Africa, and the influx from Sudan since 2023 turned the east of the country into a major operation. N'Djamena is where that operation is run from, which makes the aid sector the single largest employer of internationally-recruited staff in the country and the reason most foreign residents are here at all.
Diplomacy, security & regional politics

Chad's army is one of the region's most consequential and the country sits at the junction of the Sahel, the Lake Chad basin and Sudan — which gives a capital of its size an unusual diplomatic density. The foreign military presence that shaped the city for decades has contracted sharply since 2024, and the political and commercial consequences of that are still working through.
Livestock, cotton & gum arabic
The livestock export trade to Nigeria and Cameroon, Cotontchad, gum arabic exporters, the Dembé and Central markets
The economy that existed before oil and still employs most Chadians. Cattle move on the hoof and by lorry across borders in volumes that dwarf the formal statistics, and Chad is one of the world's significant gum arabic producers. If your work is agriculture, veterinary science or commodity trading, this is a serious place to do it.
Telecoms & digital identity
Airtel Tchad, Moov Africa Tchad, ARCEP, ANATS, Airtel Money and Moov Money
Two networks in a market that grew from about 5.94 million mobile subscriptions in January 2020 to roughly 14.5 million five years later. The regulator has been forcing subscriber identification hard since 2025, tied to the national identification number ANATS issues — which makes the ID document you obtain on arrival the key to your phone and therefore to your money.
Banking, microfinance & construction
Ecobank, Orabank, Coris/Société Générale, UBA, CBT, BSIC, the microfinance networks, contractors and cement importers
A small formal banking sector serving a small formal economy, with mobile money doing the retail work since 2012. Construction is the other visible employer: a capital growing fast on a floodplain, with an electricity network the state re-founded in July 2025 when it dissolved the SNE and replaced it with TchadElec.
