Wait about ten days, then apply for a Social Security number
The SSA verifies your status against DHS systems that lag entry by one to two weeks, so going in on day two usually wastes the trip. File Form SS-5 in person with your passport, visa and I-94. There is no fee.

If you cannot get an SSN, file for an ITIN
IRS Form W-7 produces an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number for tax filing, accepted by many banks and landlords. It grants no right to work.

Understand the citizenship ceiling on the biggest employers
Tinker Air Force Base is the largest single-site employer in the state and the FAA's Mike Monroney Aeronautical Center trains the country's air traffic controllers. Both are overwhelmingly closed to non-citizens, and much of the contractor tier around them requires clearance too. Non-citizens should aim at health care, the energy majors, the university system, Paycom and the wider corporate headquarters base.

Get a REAL ID-compliant credential if you will fly domestically
Oklahoma issues REAL ID-compliant licences and identification cards. Full federal enforcement began on 7 May 2025, so a non-compliant credential will not get you through airport security. Bring the full document set the first time rather than making two trips.

Keep a copy of every immigration document in two places
The I-94, visa page, approval notices and SSN card are asked for repeatedly across the first year — by employers, banks, landlords, Service Oklahoma and the marketplace. Scan them once and keep the set reachable from a phone. In a metro where a tornado can destroy a house in minutes, an off-site digital copy is more than administrative tidiness.

Things most newcomers don’t know

The agency you need did not exist a few years ago.

Oklahoma pulled driver licensing out of the Department of Public Safety and motor vehicle services out of the Tax Commission and put both into Service Oklahoma. Almost every relocation article written before that consolidation sends you to a department that no longer handles it. Start at Service Oklahoma and work outwards, and note that licensed operators — what everyone here still calls tag agents — can do much of it faster than a state office.

Two of the metro's biggest employers are effectively closed to non-citizens.

Tinker Air Force Base and the FAA's aeronautical centre together employ tens of thousands and dominate the local technical job market. Both require US citizenship for the overwhelming majority of roles, and much of the surrounding contractor tier requires a clearance as well. A newcomer who moves here for 'the aerospace jobs' without checking that can find the accessible market much smaller than the headline numbers suggest.

The move-in clock is short and it is not well signposted.

Oklahoma expects a new resident to convert the licence and register the vehicle within a short window of establishing residency — commonly cited as 30 days for each. It is shorter than Texas's 90 days and less publicised than California's 20. Confirm the current requirement with Service Oklahoma rather than a relocation blog, and start in week one.

The visa sticker's expiry is not your permission to stay.

A visa authorises travel to a port of entry; the officer there decides how long you may remain and records it on the I-94. People routinely plan around the wrong date and discover the error at renewal.

Common mistakes to avoid

Going to the Department of Public Safety for a driver licence it no longer issues.
Building a job search around Tinker or the FAA without checking the citizenship requirement.
Visiting a Social Security office in the first week, before DHS records have synced.
Turning up without the full REAL ID document set and needing a second appointment.
Keeping the only copies of your immigration documents in a house in Tornado Alley.
