Cost the ferry before assuming a car makes travel easier
Taking a car to the peninsula means a ferry from Palma or Alcúdia to Barcelona, Valencia or Dénia, and it is neither quick nor cheap. The 75% resident discount applies to your passenger fare on the ferry and to flights, but the vehicle is a separate line on the ticket. Things most newcomers don’t know

Six months, not twelve — and the UK is now on the exchange list.

Two assumptions catch people. The grace period for a foreign licence is six months from residency, not the year UK and US arrivals expect. And the UK–Spain exchange agreement, absent for two years after Brexit and the source of considerable alarm at the time, has been in force since March 2023 — British residents exchange without a practical test. Advice written during the gap is still circulating and is now simply wrong.

Shipping your car here is usually the wrong answer, and the tax rule is why.

Once you are resident, a foreign-plated vehicle has to go onto Spanish plates, and the matriculation tax exemption for a change of residence is conditional — on prior ownership and use, and on applying within the window. People ship a car on the assumption that the move itself exempts them, then discover the conditions after the ferry. Given that the island is 100 km across and second-hand cars are readily available here, buying locally is frequently cheaper than importing once the tax, the ferry and the inspection are counted.

The resident discount covers you on the ferry, not your car.

The 75% Balearic resident discount applies to your own fare on flights and on ferry passages to the peninsula and between the islands. A vehicle travels as a separate charged item and is not discounted in the same way. Households budget a family ferry crossing on the discounted passenger figure and are surprised at the total. For most journeys, flying and hiring at the destination costs less than taking the car.

Palma is genuinely walkable, and the island is genuinely not.

The city inside the Avingudes is compact, flat and well served by EMT buses, with the seafront path running for kilometres in both directions — many residents in Santa Catalina or the old town never use a car for daily life. Beyond the ring road the TIB bus and train network is decent to the main towns and thin everywhere else, and the Tramuntana villages effectively require driving. Decide which of those two lives you are moving to before you buy anything.
