On WHO's 2016 global ambient air quality data, Rajshahi had cut airborne particulates further than any city in the world: PM10 fell from 195 micrograms per cubic metre in 2014 to about 64 by 2016, and PM2.5 roughly halved from 70 to 37, a reduction of around 67 per cent achieved through tree planting, paving, better waste collection and a shift to battery rickshaws. That happened and it is genuinely remarkable for a South Asian city. What has also happened is that the gain has largely gone: Bangladeshi reporting now describes the former world leader in cutting pollution as among the country's most polluted, and on the morning of 6 November 2025 Rajshahi measured an air quality index of 167. Brick kilns ringing the city are the leading local source. Come for the greener, quieter city it still is, but buy purifiers for the dry season anyway.

Private-sector employment runs through BIDA on an E visa; NGO and INGO employment runs through the NGO Affairs Bureau on an N visa; BEPZA runs the export processing zones and there is none in Rajshahi — the nearest is Ishwardi EPZ in Pabna district. In practice most foreign professionals here are on the NGO route or attached to a university, because Rajshahi's economy is education, agriculture and silk rather than export manufacturing. A file lodged with the wrong body is restarted, not transferred.

You are resident if present for 182 days or more in the income year, or 90 days or more if you were in Bangladesh for more than 365 days across the four preceding years. The income year runs 1 July to 30 June. That is national law, identical in Dhaka. Rajshahi's only wrinkle is administrative: your taxes zone and circle are here, and the exit clearance certificate must come from your own circle — a long way from the airport.

Rajshahi sits on the Barind Tract, whose average annual rainfall is about 1,625 mm against a national average of about 2,550 mm — the driest part of the country. The regional issue is groundwater depletion, not flooding or salinity: the Barind Multipurpose Development Authority, established under its own 2018 Act, runs roughly 16,000 deep tube wells irrigating more than half a million hectares, and ten upazilas of Rajshahi district are classified at varying levels of water scarcity. Practically, that means asking a landlord about the building's water source and reserve, and understanding that the local development conversation is about irrigation and aquifers rather than embankments.

The Department of Immigration & Passports runs seven Divisional Passport and Visa Offices, which issue passports to Bangladeshi nationals in their jurisdiction and visas to foreign nationals, and Rajshahi is one of them. From a city this far from the capital that is a substantial practical advantage. Confirm which categories the office handles before assuming a trip to Dhaka is necessary — it is worth the phone call.

The northwestern plain regularly records the country's highest temperatures, and Rajshahi's pre-monsoon period is genuinely severe: dry, dusty heat rather than the coastal mugginess most Bangladesh advice describes. Against that, winter here is properly cool and pleasant by national standards, and there is no cyclone exposure at all. If you are choosing between Bangladeshi postings, this is a real and rarely stated trade — the worst heat, the best winter, and none of the storm risk.
