The Sericulture Development Board is headquartered in Rajshahi under the Ministry of Textiles and Jute, covering research, training, extension, cocoon and silk production and marketing. Rajshahi silk is a genuine regional industry with a state institutional apparatus behind it, not a tourist label.
Mango, horticulture & agribusiness

The northwest is Bangladesh's mango belt, and water stress is pushing farmers out of paddy and into mango, dragon fruit and sweet orange. That transition — orchards, cold chain, export standards — is where the region's commercial agribusiness work is.
Water, irrigation & climate adaptation

The BMDA runs roughly 16,000 deep tube wells over more than half a million hectares, and the region's central policy question is how to keep growing food without emptying the aquifer. For a development professional this is an entirely different brief from the coastal delta work in Khulna, and it is concentrated here.

One of the government's regional hi-tech parks, intended to keep RUET and University of Rajshahi graduates in the northwest rather than losing them to Dhaka. It is early-stage rather than a mature cluster, but it is the reason a technology role would be located here at all.
Cross-border trade & public administration
The divisional administration, the land ports on the Indian border, and the divisional offices of the national agencies
As a divisional headquarters Rajshahi carries the full set of divisional government offices — including the Divisional Passport and Visa Office — and sits close to the Indian border, which gives it a land-trade and customs economy that a similarly sized inland city would not have.
