Microsoft's UK headquarters at Thames Valley Park, Oracle, Cisco, Ericsson, Verizon, SAS, a long tail of consultancies and channel partners
This is the substance of the 'Thames Valley' label. Microsoft has been headquartered in Reading since the 1980s and its campus alone runs to over 2,000 staff with a customer experience centre and the Microsoft Reactor space attached. The knock-on effect is what matters for a job search: an enormous secondary market of integrators, resellers, contractors and consultancies orbiting the vendors.
Telecoms & connectivity
Vodafone's Berkshire operations, Three UK, Virgin Media O2's Thames Valley sites, BT and Openreach engineering functions, Verizon Business
The M4 corridor became a telecoms cluster in the 1980s and never stopped being one, which is a large part of why Reading's own full-fibre coverage is excellent. If your field is networks, RAN, or carrier software, this is one of the two or three places in Britain where the roles are.
Life sciences, consumer & FMCG
Bayer's UK operations, PepsiCo's UK head office at Green Park, Thames Water, ReadingTech and Green Park's science and R&D occupiers
Green Park, the business park south of the M4, is the counterweight to Thames Valley Park's software campuses — consumer brands, utilities and life sciences rather than enterprise IT. It got its own railway station on 27 May 2023, the first new station in Reading in over a hundred years, which changed the commute into it completely.
Higher education, meteorology & climate science
University of Reading, Henley Business School, the Department of Meteorology, the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts at Shinfield Park
Reading is one of the world's serious centres for weather and climate science. ECMWF has been in Reading for half a century and is building a new headquarters beside the University's meteorology department on Whiteknights campus for occupation in early 2027 — an unusual and very specific research cluster for a town of this size.
Professional & financial services
PwC, Deloitte, KPMG and EY Thames Valley offices, regional law firms, insurance and pensions back offices
Every Big Four firm runs a Thames Valley office out of Reading serving the technology and life-sciences clients around it. For anyone in audit, tax, consulting or corporate law, this is a genuine regional centre rather than a satellite, and the client base is unusually technology-heavy.
Health & the public sector
Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust, Berkshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, Reading Borough Council, Reading Buses
The Royal Berkshire is the acute hospital for a large slice of Berkshire and is a major employer — but be aware that its long-promised rebuild slipped in the January 2025 New Hospital Programme review to a construction start between 2037 and 2039, so it will be operating from a constrained Victorian site for a long time yet. Reading Buses is still owned by the borough council, which is now rare in England.
