Things to do in Skopje

Neighborhood · North bank, between the Stone Bridge and Kale

The largest Ottoman-era bazaar in the Balkans outside Istanbul — a hillside grid of coppersmiths, tea houses, mosques, hamams and the Bit Pazar green market at its top edge.

Local tip: Go on a weekday morning when it is a working market rather than a promenade. Bit Pazar at the top is where Skopje actually buys its vegetables, and the ajvar peppers arrive there by the truckload in late September.

Nature · 17 km west, at the end of the Treska gorge

A gorge of vertical limestone above a dammed river, with medieval monasteries on the cliffs and Vrelo Cave — one of the deepest underwater caves in Europe — reachable only by boat.

Local tip: A JSP city bus runs out here for the price of an ordinary fare and almost every visitor pays for a taxi instead. Walk the canyon path past the boat jetty for twenty minutes and the crowds simply stop.

Nature · Directly south of the city, cable car from Sredno Vodno

A 1,066 m ridge with a 66-metre cross on top, a cable car to the summit, and the whole basin laid out below — including, on a January morning, the exact shape of the smog layer you are standing above.

Local tip: The proper local move is to walk up from Sredno Vodno rather than ride, then take the cable car down. On a winter inversion day the summit is often in clean air and sunshine while the city is grey — check the air-quality portal and go.

Food · West of the centre, behind the City Park

Skopje's kafana quarter — a low-rise grid of interwar houses where half the ground floors are grills, mezze rooms and terraces that run until two in the morning.

Local tip: Order skara (grilled meat) by the portion and let the mezze arrive on its own schedule; rushing a kafana meal is the clearest tourist tell there is. Živko or the streets around Ulica Nikola Trimpare are where locals go, not the ones facing the main road.

Landmark · Above the Old Bazaar

A sixth-century fortress on the ridge over the Vardar, with the MoCA behind it — a modernist building gifted after the 1963 earthquake and holding Picasso, Hockney and Léger given in solidarity.

Local tip: The museum's collection exists because the world sent art after the earthquake, and almost nobody who visits the fortress walks the extra four minutes to see it. Free views from the ramparts at sunset, no ticket needed.

Culture · Museum of the City of Skopje, Mito Hadživasilev Jasmin

The 1963 earthquake stopped the station clock at 5:17 a.m. and it was never restarted. The ruined half of the building is now the city museum; the clock is still on the facade.

Local tip: Stand outside and look up before you go in — it is the single most eloquent object in Skopje and it costs nothing. The museum inside explains why so much of the centre is Kenzo Tange's and so little is older than 1963.
